Router setup
You do not have to use the cd.
Shutdown your Mac. Unplug the power from the router and the cable modem.
Wait 30 sec. then plug in the power to the cable modem, wait 30 sec. then plug the power to the router. Wait till you have "Internet" light then restart your Mac. The Mac should pick up an IP address and you should be able to get on-line. This is if you have a cable service provider.

After you get the Internet to work via the Lan (wired to the Mac) you can disconnect the network cable and use the Aiport to go wireless.

Wireless router configuration

If you don't already have a wireless network, you can use an AirPort base station to create one. To configure an AirPort base station, you connect the Ethernet connection to the WAN port on the base station. In turn, the base station creates a Wi-Fi (wireless) connection to the Internet. Consult the documentation for your AirPort base station for more information on how to set up your wireless connection. Once you have a Wi-Fi network available, use these steps to tell your Mac to join it:
  1. Click the Wi-Fi menu icon airport_symbol.png and select your Wi-Fi network from the list of available networks.
  2. If prompted, enter the password for your Wi-Fi network.
  3. Check "Remember this network" to have your Mac automatically join your home network.

Tip

Setting up Mac Filtering on your Wireless Router

If you have any questions on which network security to use, please see my tip, about wireless network security, also see, a word on passwords.
Note: these instructions are generalized for most common routers, if you are having trouble with your router, please post a question providing your routers model and what you are trying to set up, thank you.

First you must log into your router to change the settings. To do this, you need to user your web browser and type in the IP address of your router in the address bar like this: http://192.168.2.1/ Note, the numbers I used in the example are the most common default IP address for routers, look in the user manual for your router for your IP address, if it is 67.73.736.93 for example (I dont think any routers use that but its an example) then you would use: http://67.73.736.93/
Also please use the user manual for your router for information on how to change your routers default administrator password, this will prevent others from changing your network settings.
Now you will be at the main page for your router. There should be a column on the left or at the top of the page with options.
Find and click on "Mac filtering" or "Mac address control"
There will be a column labeled Mac addresses, and a set of options including "allow" or "deny", you want to select "allow", this will deny connections that are not on the list, and allow connections that are on your list, the "deny" option does the opposite.
Now you need to obtain the Mac address of any computers or devices you want to access your network.
For PC: click start, run, type "cmd", hit enter, this will open up command line. it should say something like "c:/" with a black background. type "ipconfig /all" A lot of text will come up, scroll through and find a device with the word wireless or wifi in its name, this is your wireless adapter. Below that will be a line that says either "Mac address" or "physical address" followed by your mac address, that will look like this: 00:K3:9D:93:J3:9H (for example only, basically its six sets of 2 characters separated by :'s) Write this down
For Mac: go to applications, utilities, terminal. type "ifconfig" A lot of text will come up, scroll through and find a device with the word wireless or wifi in its name, this is your wireless adapter. Below that will be a line that says either "Mac address" or "physical address" followed by your mac address, that will look like this: 00:K3:9D:93:J3:9H (for example only, basically its six sets of 2 characters separated by :'s) Write this down
Do this with all the computers you want to access the internet, then you will have a list of Mac addresses. Go back to your router setup page, and enter them all into the settings. when you click "done" or "apply changes" the router will restart.
Congratulations, you're done!!!

How can i put my linksys 54G a password

  1. Using the "Quick Installation Guide", follow the instructions in step 1 toset up your new wireless router. You may also need to restart your computer inorder to see the router.

Note: If you normally use a static IP address, you will have toreconfigure your internet connection to use DHCP. Go into the controlpanel and open your network connections. Edit the properties of your currentnetwork connection, and make sure that "Obtain an IP address automatically" isenabled.
  2. Connect to the router using your web browser by typing"http://192.168.1.1" into the URL address box.
  3. Leave the Username field blank, and enter the password "admin" to accessyour router when the login prompt appears.

Note: You will notice immediately a list of menu options (Setup, Wireless,Security, etc.), and as you click on each of these submenus appear. Thisdocument will refer to a menu-submenu combination as Menu -> Submenu.
  4. Setup -> Basic Setup. In the "Internet Setup" section, choose"Static IP" from the drop down menu. Fill in the appropriate values thatdescribe your network. (You don't need to change anything in the optionalsection just below that.)

    setup-internet.png
  5. In the "Network Setup" section, you should at least set your timezone toEastern Time, although you may make changes to the DHCP server as well if youanticipate more than 50 users connecting to your network at once.

    setup-network.png
  6. Wireless -> Basic Wireless Settings. Set the Wireless networkmode to "Mixed" if you would like both B and G clients to be able to connect toyour network. Otherwise you can just select "B-only". The "Wireless NetworkName" will be provided by CNS. Make sure that you disable "WirelessSSID Broadcast" to give a little extra security.

    wireless-basic.png
  7. Wireless -> Wireless Security. CNS recommends that you use atleast WEP based security to protect your network. Choose WEP from the dropdown menu and then select "128 bits 26 hex digits" for the "WEP Encryption".Enter a passphrase into the "Passphrase" field and click "Generate" to generatethe corresponding HEX keys. Distribute key 1 to your users as the WEP key foryour network.

    wireless-security.png
  8. Wireless -> Wireless MAC Filter. CNS also recommends that youuse a MAC address list to filter access to your network. Click the "Edit MACFilter List" and add all the MAC addresses that are going to be accessing yournetwork. Any time a new user requires access, you will have to add them tothis list.

mac-filter.png IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure that you add the MAC address of thecomputer you are using to set up your router first, before enabling this filter.Otherwise you will be unable to access the router and will have to reset therouter. If you do have to reset the router because you have locked yourselfout, there is a small reset button on the back of the router that will resetthe router.

Once the appropriate MAC addresses have been added, "Enable" the filter, andchoose the option "Permit only PCs listed to access the wirelessnetwork".wireless-macfilter.png
  9. Administration -> Management. You should make sure you changeyour password on this screen. "admin" is not a secure password! Also, you should disable "Remote Router access" so that your router cannot beconfigured from outside your network. UPnP is a protocol that opens ports inyour firewall on the fly, and can post a security threat. We recommend thatyou disable this, but if you are running applications like MSN video chat, youmay have to have this enabled.

    administration-management.png
  10. Administration -> Log. If you would like to keep a log ofconnections to your network, enable the logging here.

    administration-log.png
  11. That's it! You should be on the air!

If it is XP then in the bottom right hand corner you will find Wireless network connection ( looks like 1 computer monitor). Use that icon to connect to the wireless network.
If it is windows Vista, then in the bottom right hand corner you will find 2 computer monitor icon. Use that icon to connect to the wireless network.
If it is Windows 98/ME/2000 then use the adapter utility to connect to the wireless network.
For MAC you will see the AIRPORT icon at the top.

Also check the wireless settings of the router. For this you will need to open the router set up page

I just set up a netgear router and a lynksys expander. All my laptops work, but iphone & itouch will not. Seems as though the password has changed. Can this happen? How can I find the password? When I...

If you did not configure the Netgear wireless router and changed the default settings and the default password password, then your wireless system is open to anyone hacking into your system and change your wireless router's settings and they can hack into your computers and your Internet connection. The Linksys expander will increase the wireless range to give a wider coverage to your router.
I suggest you reset the Netgear back to the factory defaults (press the pinhole button on the back of the Netgear router until the LEDs flash then release this button,
The configure the Netgear as follows :-
To set-up and secure the wireless router from unauthorized access, follow these steps: -
1. Connect the wireless router to your computer with a LAN cable.
2. Start your browser and enter the router's configuration URL IP address.
3. Enter the router setup, login and password
4. Change the admin password
5. Go to the wireless settings and change the default SSID and turn off SSID broadcast.
6. Setup encryption key the strongest is WPA2 (if not then WPA).
7. For further security measures - turn on MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of the wireless cards on the computer/s you want to connect to this wireless router.
8. Record the settings you have made and keep it in a safe place and Save the settings.
9. Configure the wireless cards on the computer/s with the SSID and encryption settings of the router.
10. Remove the LAN cable between the router and the computer then the computers should be able to connect to the router wirelessly.

TP-LINK TL-WR340G, No internet connection

Look for the MAC address clone feature on the router. If the router does not ahve the auto clone MAC feature, you'll need to manually input the MAC address of your computer.

To get the MAC address or Physical address of the computer do this
Click start>run>type in "cmd" and press okay (without the " ").
On the Command prompt type in ipconfig/all and then press enter, look for physical address.
Then input that on the MAC clone feature of the computer to your router and then power cycle everything (turn everything off and then turn on modem first-then router-then computer).

Installation CD

I lost my installation CD and received these instructions from the Belkin Tech Support, and was able to install the Wireless N Router with no problems.
Follow the steps given below for configuring the Belkin N router manually.
- Connect the computer to the "LAN" port on the router and connect the modem to the Internet/"WAN" port, using Ethernet cables.
- Take a paper clip, insert the paper clip in the reset hole of the router and hold it for 15 seconds.
- The power light will flash and then come back "ON" solid, indicating that the router is being restored to factory defaults.
- The corresponding lights on the front of the router should be lit up.
- On the computer, check if you have an IP address in the range of 192.168.2.x.
- If not, specify a static IP address, gateway and "DNS" address by following the steps given in the link-
http://web.belkin.com/support/kb/kb.asp?a=2824
- Log on to the router web interface by typing in http://192.168.2.1, in the address bar of your browser.
- By default, the password is blank.
- Click on "Connection Type" in the left hand column under "Internet WAN" heading.

If the connection type is Dynamic (cable):

- Choose "Dynamic" and then click on "Next".
- Type in your “Host Name”, if you’re Internet Service Provider has provided it. Else, leave it blank.
- Click on "Change WAN MAC Address".
- Click on the button "Clone".
- Click on "Apply Changes".

If the connection type is PPPOE (DSL):

- Choose "PPPOE" and click on "Next".
- Enter the user name and password given by your Internet Service Provider.
- Save the settings.
- Click on the "Home" link at the top of the screen.

Internet Status should show "Connected" on the top right hand corner of the web page.

If the problem persists, please get back to us with the following information:

1. Type of connection provided by your ISP (Is it PPPOE, Dynamic or static).
2. Name of the Internet service provider (ISP).

Trying to instal wireless router

Hi Jwsgrl,

Did you buy the router new or used?

if used it might still have the old user settings on it that sometimes requires MAC addy's to be registered on the wireless access point site (192.168.1.1). If this is the case then hit the restart button while the router is on to default all settings.

the default login and pw for linksys is:
User Name: admin
Password: admin

You probably already have it set up since you followed the instructions but it never hurts to mention:
1. Make sure that your modems Ethernet line is connected to your wireless router Ethernet port, then using the 1 of 4 open jacks on the router connect #1 to your computers Ethernet Pprt.

let me know how i can assist you further.

-Daniel.
