Before you format back up all of your data. Then right-click on My Computer>select Manage>Computer Management Window select Storage from left side by clicking it once then select Disk Management(local) from the right side by double clicking it. Now you have a picture of your harddrive(s). If you have more you should see "C" and "D" format C:

There is not 2 drives on your laptop. The single drive is partitioned into 2 parts.
When you re-install XP, be sure to re-install on the first partition (it will ask you during the setup). If you re-format the entire drive all will be lost.

insert your restoration disc, and it will do everything and ask you during the install.

    1 Turn on the computer.

2 As the computer starts, press on the keyboard until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears on the screen.

You must press before the Windows logo appears on the screen. If you press after the Windows logo appears on the screen, the Advanced Boot Options menu will not appear on the screen. If you do not see the Advanced Boot Options menu, restart the computer, and then repeat this step until you see the menu on the screen.

3 Press the on the keyboard to select Repair Your Computer on the Advanced Boot Options menu, and then press .

4 Specify the language settings that you want, and then click Next.

5 Log in as a user who has administrative credentials, and then click OK.

6 Click Dell Factory Image Restore.

7 In the Dell Factory Image Restore window, click Next.

8 Click to select the Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition check box.

    9 Click Next.
The computer is restored to the default factory configuration.

10 When the restore operation is completed, click Finish to restart the computer.
The software is now installed as it was when the computer was first received.

Acer has been know to have a hidden recovery partition, it is basiclly like a build-in recovery cd. I believe you need to press alt+f10 sometime during bootup or access acer erecovery and then select recovery to factory settings. If it asks for a password, be default it should be 000000 or your acer empowering password.

These are ways to do it i can find.... do you have the manual?

i have located the manual on acers website.$FILE/AS5680_5630_3690-ENG-OLM_0727.pdf

There will be information in there on reformatting

From Page 94 of the manual:

    Restore from backup

You can restore backups previously created (as stated in the Create backup

section) from hard disk, CD or DVD.

    1 Boot to Windows XP.

2 Press + to open the Acer eRecovery Management utility.

3 Enter the password to proceed. The default password is six zeros.

4 In the Acer eRecovery Management window, select Recovery actions and

    click Next.

5 Select the desired restore action and follow the onscreen instructions to

    complete the restore process.

Note: The "Restore C:" item is enabled only if there is a user

backup stored on the hard disk (D:\). Please refer to the Create

    backup section.

I have a ace 3690. I had to wipe ou the hard drive and the alt+f10 function will not work. I bought a copy of windows xp media center and when it gets to 94% it comes up with cant find all the dll files....

You need the Acer restore CD. If you don't have it call Acer and they can supply you with one. Costs about $20. It's probably looking for a specific driver file. If you didn't reformat the hard drive then it's looking at the current configuration to load device drivers. You will need to reformat the drive before reinstalling windows. if you need data from the hard drive you can pull it out and get an external case for it and access it through another PC that way.
