Question about HP ScanJet 5100C Flatbed Scanner

HP Scanjet 5100c and USB

My new PC does not have parallel port and I can't get my Scanjet 5100c working through one of the USB ports. Is there a solution to my problem... other than scrapping the scanner.

Thanks

Richard

I have tried installing all of HP's updates (software and drivers) and it did not work. My PC does not recognise HP Scanjet 5100c when it is on a USB port. It worked fine on my old PC through the parallel port. A strange thing, is that my old Deskjet 710c printer which is design to operate through a parallel port function very well unde USB using an adapter cable (USB to parallel).

    Thank you for your help,

    Richard

Hi Richard,

Download the top listed driver from this HP support page:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=61840

I think the next one down, for parallel only, is the one you are probably trying to install. You have to uninstall that one first, before installing the new one.
Do it from the Control Panel, System, Device Manager. Uninstall the Driver, then 'Install Driver' and choose the 'Browse my computer for driver' type option, navigate to the folder you unzipped the new one to and select and install it. Then reboot.
It should work now.

Hope this helps

This model HP5470C was supplied with a parallel and USB cables to connect to computers.
For PCs the manual recommends using the parallel cable and for Apple computers to use the USB cable.
If the Toshiba does not have a parallel printer port then try using the USB cable.
For a manual for your scanner go to this WEB site.

What kind of cable connects the scanner to a pc

Take a look at this picture:
nonontech_205.jpg

The while cable with two flat ends is the cable that connects the scanner to the computer. It's called "Parallel Cable". Here's the picture:
nonontech_206.jpg

You can buy it from here (Click Here)

If I am right, this scanner has also a usb port, if so, you can use this type of cable, Hp USB Printer/Scanner cable:

If you have problem, let me know.

Good Luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Is there a way to run this thing through a usb port if it was set up for parrerl link

Yes, but you have to buy an adaptor for it. What you need to buy is called a bidirectional USB to Parallel adaptor. The "bidirectional" part is important, since you're using a scanner, not a printer.

Google for "bidirectional usb parallel adaptor" shows that they cost between $20 and $30

I did not find to drivers and controllers by my hp scanjet 5100c

Sorry to say, but the ScanJet 5100c is not a Vista compatible unit.
The same thing happened with some of the earlier HP units when XP came out.
This is not the only piece of equipment out there that is not supported in Vista, it is too old for them to write drivers for.

HP does offer a trade ups option for older equipment. You can read about it here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01123715&lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&dlc=en&product=61840

Connecting my HP ScanJet 5200C scanner to my HP Pavilion Home pc

Rookssailor,

I don't think you can (successfully) run this scanner off the paralell port. I'm drawing on memory here but I think this scanner has serial and usb ports. If you are running Windows XP, use the USB hookup. If you are running Windows 95, 98, Milliniaum then you might want to use the serial port. At any rate the scanner software should be installed before you plugin the scanner.

If I'm completely "full of it" and you really want to use a Paralell connection then you might want to use a paralell to USB adaptor (Belkin, perhaps others make one of these).
