My player is for region 2 but has been programmed for all regions. In fact it is one particular disc that I have problems with. I have just recontrolled the player, it plays all regions, less the disc I put in for control and the disc, I have a problem with, which are both Region 2. Can it be that it won't play a double-layered disc? However the DVD I used for control won't play either, and I've had no trouble before. Downloaded DVDs also play without trouble.

A few things to check

The DVD is within your own region
If it is burnt the format is compatible
The DVD is clean i.e. No scratches
Try several different DVD's purchased from different places to confirm that it is not reading

Let me know how it all went;

    Hi,

see if the player tries to read the disc. Load a disc and listen.
    Does
the player make squealing noises or is it totally quiet? Squealing
noises may indicate that the player is trying to synchronize with the
disc but can't due to an obstruction on the lens or in the laser path
inside the pickup or a defect in the pickup. This can also be caused by
an intermittent signal problem due to a faulty ribbon cable.

    Totally
silent means that the photo sensor is not getting any usable input from
the laser at all, meaning that the pickup is blind for lack of a
    better word.
This can be caused by an obstruction of the beam by
foreign matter on the lens or inside the pickup all the way to a
marginal or failed laser diode and/or photosensor array. This can also
be caused by a bad ribbon cable with one or more severed traces.

    You
could try to clean the optics. This is the most common malfunction as
far as i know in all disc players. It would involve taking the cover
off and finding a way to expose the lense, and then cleaning it with a
very gentle brush. some players have a cover for the lense that swings
to the side during playing, this greatly reduces the chance of dust
accumulating but it is still better to give it a try.

If you see dust on the lense, then its just that simple. clean, close, play.

check on the small shafting that
guides the carriage of the laser pickup. Dirt, grome, dust and
solidified lubricant can cause stoppage of the carriage and the laser
eye then fails to read the next track.

Hi - the CD tray cannot open. It is empty - no CDs in there. I hear a buzz, but an "error" message comes on. I tried pushing on the tray while turning on; I unplgged the CD player, I put it on...

The loading tray belt has more than likely stretched or snapped.
The buzzing you hear will be the motor spinning freely.
The 'ERROR' message will show up because the tray isn't opening
and activating the 'tray open' switch, therefore the 'tray closed' switch
is permanently activated after the 'open/close button is pressed.

Check disc error

When you get a please check disc error when playing a DVD in your DVD machine, this is a signal that the lens of the DVD machine is getting weaker. I would ask you to try and play a CD in that machine. If it plays that means the lens of your DVD machine is weak. You have to change or purchase a new DVD machine.

I had this happen to me as ell. you've probably got a cd stuck under the revolving tray. I took the top cover off and then opened the drawer and removed the offending disk. If you're not technically minded it's probably better to take it in to a repair shop. Mike
