Question about Lexmark Wheelwriter 15 Series II Typewriter

3 Answers

Carraige moves to middle and will go no further.

I have cleared out tabs and tried to express to right. No luck, it just stays in the middle and will return to the left but that is all. Prior to this I had a problem with the Correction ribbon. Now the mechanism that moves the tape does not move. Also, the keys don't engage the correction ribbon. I am sure that I probably need a good professional cleaning but I can't find anyone locally who works on these. Please help.

Hello kstockman:

I am in Franklin, TN, too. Nashville Office Machine will clean, oil, and check Selectrics for $81.50. If the job doesn't use that much deposit, but parts are needed for repairs, they will apply money from the deposit toward the cost of parts. They have an enormous stock of parts for Selectrics, which they bought when the manufacture of IBM typewriter parts was discontinued. I am sorry, but I can't remember where they are located, but their phone number is 615-321-2679. They will also take the cover off and look at the typewriter briefly when you take it in, and can determine in a moment if they can fix it, and won't charge you the deposit or do any work, if it is obvious that they can't. They are very honest and reputable, and you can count on what they say. I drive all the way up from Columbia to have them work on my Selectric. They were recommended to me by a retired corporate secretary who used them for over 20 years and recommends them highly.

Sounds like Auto return is activated. Try holding the code key down while pressing the letter R key.

How can I set a right hand tab

I assume you are talking about Flush Right Tabulation.

To set a flush right tab:
(1) Position the carrier (or cursor) at the point where you want a flush right tab to be set.
(2) Hold down the Tab set/clear key and press the 2 key.

To clear a flush right tab:
(1) Press the Tab/back tab key to move the carrier (or cursor) to the flush right tab position.
(2) Hold down the Code key and press the Tab set/clear key.

To use a flush right tab:
(1) Press the Tab/back tab key to move the carrier (or cursor) to the flush right tab position.
(2) Type the text. Characters will appear on the display as they are typed. Corrections can be made on the display before the text is printed.
(3) Press the Print key. The text is printed aligned with the flush right tab position.

My Sears electric typewriter "scholar w/

could be the carraige release button on the carraige is stuck down (pull it back up). Otherwise the mach. is stuck in "tab" mode or the escapement (the mechanism that hold the carraige in place and lets it advance 1 space at a time) is FUBAR'ed, in eithor case it would need professional help.

I just opened my typewriter and i've set everything but when i go to type, nothing moves. i'm pretty sure it's supposed to automatically shift so that i can continue typing freely but it doesn't do that!...

there is probably a carraige lock, to lock the carraige in place during transit. its usually a small lever under the carraige on the right of left side. if you have a manual, it should be in there. or it could be that the margin is set there. try resetting the margins.

My royal typewriter i just purchased on line its from the 50s and is blue has a carraige return problem. the carraige always stays to the left so you can not type you push it back and it just flys right...

The starwheel/escapement is probably gummed up. If you look from the bottom, you should see a "star" shaped part. Carefully spray a light lub around the area and move the carriage back and forth to free it. It may take several attempts.

How do you clear a tab someone preset. when I get to the far right of page and hit return it will on return to a tab. How do I clear all the preset margins or tabs.?? thanks

To clear margins, you have to hit the return button to find the left margin, then hit margin release and back space to move the margin left or spacebar to move to the right, then hit left margin button to set the new position. Right margin now. Hold spacebar down and find right margin position, hit margin rease and either spacebar to the right or backspace to the left to the new margin position then hit right margin button to set the new position. Tabs now. hit the tab key, when it goes to the first set tab, hit the tab clear key, then hit the tab key again, then tab clear again etc.

When typing carraige does bnot move so I type 5

Hi

First, with the machine turned off, grasp the carrier (this is where the ribbon seats) and see if it moves smoothly to the right and left. If not then the metal shaft that it moves on may be gummed up and dirty. If so, clean it with alcohol and lube it lightly with a light oil.

I have a swintec 2600 i cannot get it to clear out the tabs and i need to type beyound were the tab is

You must mean the margins. To move the right margin further to the right. Move the carriage to the right margin then depress the mar release key then space over further to the right to a new position and depress the right margin key. You should here a beep. If you just want to type further to the right of the margin, when it stops typing, simply depress the mar release key and continue typing.

Carriage return problem

If it returns with the express key the latching mech. on the rt. side is probably gummy. Take off the case, get some WD40 and spray the mechinism that latches the ret on the rt. side below the platen.

Carriage release

try jiggling the carraige around a bit and then try using that lever thats on the right side of the carraige. you might even try both at once to see what frees it up. i had the same problem and it worked for me. That's the right tab, it may be in a jammed position so it wont open properly.
