If this is a vent free fireplace and you are seeing sooting then you really need to shut it off.the way the unit is allowed to operate ventless is by a special pilot assembly that does not allow carbon build up if your are sooting up then you are making carbon monoxide which is deadly.you can not ignore this CAN BE DEADLY

Clean the venturi pipe where the gas is mixed. Bugs and spiders like to build things in there.

Electric fireplace or wood burning fireplace. Which is better ?

Source: The Good And Bad Of Electric Fireplaces
You are able to save money by using electric fireplaces because they are significantly cheaper and more efficient to run. As opposed to turning on the heat for the entire home, you only have to actively heat one area although this is the same case for traditional fireplaces. Still, using an electric fireplace eliminates the need for buying wood, starting and maintaining a flame, and cleaning/servicing a fireplace with a chimney. Moreover, you are able to use an electric fireplace for an extended period of time. Wood-burning stoves are limited by the supply of wood. Gas burning fireplaces don't have that restriction, but require costly installment and creation of gas-line access. A foundational benefit of electric fireplaces is not causing any harmful particle emissions, which are a major side-product of traditional fireplaces, and one of the causes of their degradation.
How To Care For An Electric Fireplace

electric-fireplace-luqhqtew4twq4g4srgxhyj11-3-0.jpg Given the clear advantages that electric fireplaces have over traditional fireplaces, even die-hard fireplace lovers can justify making the switch to electric. Still, it is important to be apprised of the precautions and maintenance requirements before committing to a purchase. The most likely "repair" will be to change out bulbs as they die, typically about every two years. Models with LED bulbs will likely never need replacement. If you have a fireplace with conventional bulbs, replacing them is simple and straightforward. It is done by unplugging the fireplace, allowing it to completely cool if it was in use, and then accessing the rear panel of the unit. The panel can be unscrewed easily with a screwdriver. With the back panel removed, you should look for the bulb housing. This may differ from model to model, so consult the user guide before continuing (making sure to note what type of bulb is required). When you have the replacement, remove the old, and replace it with the new bulb. Some fireplaces require halogen bulbs which should not be handled by hand as this could compromise the longevity and quality of the bulb, in which case you should wear gloves to handle the bulb. With the new bulb in, you can screw back the rear panela and use the fireplace normally.

Electric fireplaces contain fans that are instrumental in providing heat to the room. The fan, as well as the other components, are usually pre-lubricated. However, if the fan is halting or not moving smoothly, it may indicate that cleaning is required. As with any other maintenance, make sure the unit is turned off and unplugged. You can use your vacuum's brush and wand attachments to clean the fan. Begin by taking off the grate and lightly cleaning to remove dust and grime. When finished, you can retrace with the wand attachment to pick up any remaining dirt. Replace the grate when you're finished.

The exterior mantle requires nothing more than occasional dusting and wiping. You should avoid the use of harsh chemical sprays, and instead, opt for mild soapy water and a lint-free cloth. Cleaning the glass display and mantle will make a big difference in the appearance of the unit. Be sure to dry the unit completely to avoid streaks and water marks.

We can't get the front doors to open

Are you sure the front doors aren't just decorative? Is it a gas fireplace? Is it natural gas? LPG? Is it vented? Ventfree? Do you have the make/model/serial #?

A little more information would help a lot.

How is air supply regulated in wood burning stoves?

To regulate air flow, there are damper devices built into the stove, flue and stove pipes. Keeping the air flowing correctly through a wood-burning stove is essential for safe and efficient operation of the stove. Fresh air needs to enter the wood compartment to provide oxygen fuel for the fire; as the fire burns, the smoke must be allowed to rise through the stove pipes, and exit through the chimney.

I have recently bought a second-hand electric fire which looks exactly like The Adam Ribbon chrome Electric Fire. It has three switches for flame only and then two heat settings. What i don't understand is...

The dial, numbered 1-9, is probably the heater fan speed control. Or it also could be the flame effect control (speeds the flames up or slows them down). But, I suspect its the heater fan speed control. Either way, it works like a rheostat. As far as efficiency is concerned, despite what the manufacturer may say, electric fireplace effect heaters are not that efficient in the long term. Nor, are they that reliable. They do require routine maintenance to increase their longevity.

Hope this answered your questions.

Avalon Wood Burning fireplace Inserts are manufactured by Travis Industries. They are very protective of the retailers and will not field any questions or sell parts directly to the customer. With that in mind, you'll have to go back to the dealer you purchased it from (if they are still in business) or go to the link below and search for the dealer nearest to you. The tubes you require are part of the "Air Wash System".

Black soot on glass and black smoke comes out

Remove the burner and clean all holes ,typically at the end of the burner is a cheep sheet metal valve. This valve adjusts the air to gas mixture by rotating it to increase or decrease the combustible air intake.Air must be sucked into the burner as natural gas is injected into it, this makes for a clean flame,The flame should be blue with small yellow tips.If the flame is long and yellow and sooty increase the air intake on the burner valve.
