Don't know how to download memory card onto computer
I inherited this camera (Canon Powershot G5), and don't have the manual. The memory card is full, and I don't know how to download the pics onto my PC. I have a Dell desktop, an XPS 400. Is there some sort of cord or attachment I need to do this with, or can this memory card somehow plug into my tower somewhere? Also, a question about the battery, which is rechargeable--how much life do these batteries have? In other words, how many times can I recharge the battery before I need a new batt pack? The battery is classed as a BP-511 Li-ion battery. thanks!
Re: don't know how to download memory card onto computer
You can get the manual here. To download to computer you need the cord that goes from the camera to the USB port on the computer. as for the battery you usually get 2-3 years of life before you need to replace.

ALTERNATE WAY TO TRANSFER PHOTOS AND VIDEOS TO A COMPUTER If your photos and videos are stored on the memory card, then remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into an USB memory card reader. Connect this USB memory card reader and memory card into the USB port of your working computer. Your computer will see this as an USB Mass Storage Device or an external storage device; you can then open the folder on the memory card and copy the photos and to your computer. Memory card reader is a handy device and is inexpensive. You can copy photos from other cameras and you can also download photos off your memory card to someone else's computer without the need of installing any programs.

Canon doesn't make full software setups available on their web site. However, you don't need it.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as iPhoto on Mac or Windows Photo Gallery or Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ) on Windows.
You can download the manual and more from Canon's web site at http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/digital_cameras/powershot_a_series/powershot_a75#BrochuresAndManuals
Try formatting in a PC. If fails then card is bad ! Return for exchange. If works in the camera, great. ( or you may need to format it in the camera too.)
Supported windows Operating system
Windows 98 Second edition(SE) Windows Me Windows 2000 Service pack 4 Windows XP SP 1 and SP 2
Canon PowerShot A430 has no update about the new driver software for windows 7
Try doing this direct transfer in your computer
1. Connect the camera to your computer using the supplied USB cable of your camera.
2. Set the mode dial to (playback) and turn on the power. The camera and computer will be able to communicate.
3. If there is no pop up window that has Canon CameraWindow, Click the [Start] menu and select [all Programs] or [Programs]. followed by [Canon Utilities], [Camera Window], [PowerShot-IXY-IXUS-DV 6] and [CameraWindow]
4. Download the images. * Download the images using the camera or the computer. * By default, the downloaded images are saved into the [My Pictures] folder.
** If the above process does not work you can just use the memory card of your camera and connect that on your laptop. (some laptop has built in card reader) The memory card works like a flash drive and you can just transfer files like transferring from one folder to another.** Issue on the operating system compatibility.
Sounds like you are watching the thumbnails but the files are still on the camera... try downloading/transfering via iphoto.. the files should show up in your iphoto library and if you double click them, it will launch quicktime and allow you to play it... let me know if that gets you there... k
thanks! where is it that I can get the manual, exactly? Do you have them to download, or would I need to order a hard copy?
