Question about JVC GR-DX97 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

2 Answers

How do I connect my digital camera to the TV so I can playback.

I have a JVC GR-DVM1 DIGITAL VIDEO CAMERA that my father gave me years ago. I used it a few times to video my children when they were little.  It was packed away and we just got it out again.  It has the instructions for how to video tape, but I cannot find instructions on how to connect it to the TV to show my family the tapes.  I have the docking station and many cords (even a 5 pin computer cord?).  I need some instruction.  Thanks, JM

Thank you for the information!  I do have an analog TV and VCR/DVD player.  I'm sure I have the RCA cords.  However, I have a Mac not a PC, so I am not sure I can transfer it to my computer unless there is a converter to USB.  What I need to know is which cord connects to the TV from the docking station (other than RCA or is that all), and what is a JLIP?  And what would the DC OUT for?

I could probably benefit from the diagrams in French from randy320sgi, if it contains the docking station.  I have the pamphlet that shows how to use the video camera in english, french, and spanish.

    Thank you, JM Gidley

Great!  Can you email it? You should have my email since I am getting emails from fixya.  My dad bought it in the US.  JM

Gidley,
Hey that is a classic video camera, very cool, one of the first to have PC connectivity, one of the first to use a firewire connection (fast) to a PC, all that in mind the little docking station that came with it should have video (RCA) type plugs on it that would match up to most TV's and VCR's (if you still have one) DVD players, you can play back your movies. It has the ability to store analog to digital onto your computer - if you have a DVD burner on your PC you can make DVD's out of those old movies with your kids, that would be the way to go. I'll dig around to see if one of my sources still has his manual for this camera. I'll check back with you within the next day.

    JM,
I can email you the french version, it does show the docking station - and how to hook it up to various devices - where can I send or post it? I wouldn't worry about the Mac even if this device is old it will recognize a firewire connection and iDVD should be able to import the movies from the camera. Once you have it working you may want someone who's fluent in french to help with key items. Then go the the Apple Store and find out what they may have to further take advantage of the camera. Keep me posted, it's got plenty of potential even as old as it is. Did you father purchase in the US or Canada?

    JM,
I do not have your email, I just started posting solutions for fixya and they don't link back to your emails, everything is from the site. I would be glad to send you the french version I have and I'll keep looking for an english version, there has to be a site out there that has an archive for free. If I find one I send you the link as well. Some of these so called manual help sites charge to join and for anything they may have archived. Thanks for hanging with me. The other jacks and the DC out is for additional accessories for video editing boards and mixing equipment, most of that stuff now is all done on computer now both Mac and PC.

Just output via the AV jacks, and use a TV/Video input card or USB dongle. You can then Play the DVR, and Record on the PC, With Video Recording Software, through the Video Input. On your chosen device. You can get Component, or Composite Video IN. Audio is in Stereo. Then you will be able to be able to use your camera again... ?

Connect JVC GR-D240ek to vista laptop

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

A firewire to USB will not work. It has to be firewire to firewire. A JVC GR-D240ek uses 4-pin, IEEE 1394 compliant Digital Video Connector [DV OUT] to connect a 1394 cable (also known as a FireWire or i.Link cable) to a laptop equipped with an equivalent IEEE 1394 port. Please note that some laptops firewire port could either be 4 pins or 6 pins.

Soon as that connection as shown above is established, you can use Windows Import Video to capture / download the videos.

Other notes (from the same Windows Help link above) :
  • You can also open Windows Import Video by using Windows Movie Maker. After you connect ... your DV camera, and your computer, start Windows Movie Maker, turn on your DV camera, put it into playback mode, and Windows Import Video should open automatically.
  • You can also open Windows Import Video by using Windows Photo Gallery. After you connect ...your DV camera, and your computer, start Windows Photo Gallery, turn on your DV camera, and put it into playback mode. In Windows Photo Gallery, click File, click Import from Camera or Scanner, click your DV camera in the list of devices, click Import, and then follow the instructions.
  • You can also open Windows Import Video by using Windows Live Photo Gallery. (This options requires you to install Windows Live on your computer.) After you connect your...your DV camera, and your computer, start Windows Live Photo Gallery, turn on your DV camera, and put it into playback mode. In Windows Live Photo Gallery, click File, click Import from a camera or scanner, click your DV camera in the list of devices, click Import, and then follow the instructions.
Verify that the laptop's firewire port is 100% up to specs and totally compliant to IEEE 1394.

God luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Dirty video head! Playback newly opened blank tape for five minutes, after that eject, reinsert, playback then eject again five times, these will serve as your video head cleaner, never use "video head cleaning cassette tape" for it will only damage your camera. Most camera has built in video head cleaner installed inside and activates only when you insert, initial play/rec, and ejects a tape. If the problem is still there you need pro fix then.[:0)
