Paper jam on HP officejet j6450

My printer display says there is a paper jam but I have searched and there is no #*# paper jam. I cleaned the rollers, turned it off to no avail. This printer is only 6 months old and I'm about to throw it out in the street.
Thanks,
Diana

On the J6450, the paper sensor (the spot sensor) is located on the printhead carriage, to the right of the cartridges. It is a small black box. If you try to do an alignment with the top cover open, you can see the (red on the J6450) light below the sensor shining at the paper. The problem is that HP attached a stick-on cleaning brush right next to the spot sensor. I guess the idea was to brush dust away from the paper before it got to the sensor. Well, this little brush can slip and block the spot sensor. When this happens, the printer will have trouble detecting the edge of the paper and/or the paper type. When this happens, you get either a paper out or a paper jam error. The solution: REMOVE THE STICK ON BRUSH. (it's only lightly glued and it has probably moved a bit from where it was designed to be). Usually, a paper jam will cause the brush to get caught on the edge of the paper and it will dislodge the brush and block the sensor....

I always recommend that paper jams be removed in the direction the paper would normally travel. Forcibly removing jams generally will not damage rollers, as the hardware tend to cause paper to tear before anything breaks. Removing paper jams in the wrong direction however can break one-way "finger" paper path sensors occasionally. If you are not experiencing a jam every single print, you are probably in good shape.

As for cleaning the rollers, if you have taken the rear door off the printer you are halfway there. You should be able to turn the rollers in one direction or the other by hand. There are plenty of products out there to clean rubber rollers (I use Blow-Off Rubber rejuvenator) but rubbing alcohol on a cloth can work as well. Turn the rollers to get at the entirety of them and scrub along the length with an alcohol dampened rag.

For the paper jam you remove the back cover and clean the 4 rubber rollers with alcohol, you can rotate the rollers forward while you clean. For carriage jam you start by cleaning the encoder strip that runs across behind the carriage unit, the clear strip with black bars on it, you can wipe with a Q-tip damp with alcohol. If no help you may need to take apart and clean dried ink off of the service station on the right.

Says Paper Jam But No Paper In It

Hi

Paper jams can be real or false. The unit may report a paper jam when there is not any jammed paper, however, the solution to a real paper jam or a false paper jam is the same. WARNING: Jammed paper must be removed using the rear access door and the power cord must be disconnected or a carriage jam or mechanical damage may occur. Do not remove jammed paper from the front of the unit.
  1. Turn off the HP product and turn it so the back of the unit faces you.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the all-in-one. The power cord must be disconnected to allow the paper feed rollers to turn freely.
  3. Locate and open the rear access door by pressing in on the left side tab and then pulling the door toward you. Figure 1: Removing the rear access door bd842f6.jpg
  4. Inspect the pressure rollers on the rear access door and verify that they are clean and turn freely. Clean the rollers if needed with a soft towel lightly moistened with water. If the rollers do not turn freely, replace the rear access door.
  5. Inspect the pressure rollers on the rear access door and verify that they are clean and turn freely. Clean the rollers if needed with a soft towel lightly moistened with water. If the rollers do not turn freely, replace the rear access door. Click How to buy on this page to order replacement parts.
  6. From the rear access door opening, remove the jammed paper.
  7. Remove the remaining paper from the paper supply tray. Discard any paper that is damaged or crumpled and then re-stack and reload the paper into the paper supply tray.
  8. Reinstall the rear access door.
  9. Reconnect the power cord to the unit and turn the unit on. If a carriage stall occurs after clearing the paper jam, resolve the carriage stall.
Preventing paper jams The following information will help prevent paper jams from occurring:
  • When loading paper in to the paper tray, push it in until it meets first resistance. Do not continue pushing the paper in. If the paper is pushed too far in, more than one page is picked and paper jams result. This is the most common cause of paper jams with the HP Officejet 410 series.
  • Never use paper that is wrinkled or damaged in any way.
  • If you are having problems using paper that has already been printed on once, replace it with fresh paper.
  • Remove and then reinstall the rear access door. Verify that the access door is fully locked in place. The paper can skew if the rear access door isn't locked.
  • Every six months - one year, clean the paper feed rollers with a rag slightly dampened with clean water. Over time the paper feed rollers accumulate dust and do not function as well as they once did.
  • When printing envelopes, tuck the flap into the envelope and crease the folds before printing.
