try hooking an external speaker or earphones/ headset may do. if it has sound, you need to replace your internal speakers. if still no sound, might be that you need to replace your sound card. but first try updating your audio driver. drivers for your computer is readily availble at Lenovo's website at consumersupport.lenovo.com or if you are still in warranty, call Lenovo's tech support at 18774536686.
right click on the my computer
select properties-hardware-device manager-hda sound cotrolar- update driver option
then select from option- this time only -select program from list-do'nt search i will choose the program
then choose have disk and then choose the driver which you are loading

You may have to install or update drivers Most of the
drivers/software I get are from a web site driverguide.com you need to fill out
a free registration then search for the driver you need download it in a format
you can use install it and then most times reboot the computer

The soundcard worked in Vista because it was updated with the drivers for your monitor where as Xp is very old and hence did not have the drivers.
Now what you can do is just insert the driver installation discs that you got along with your laptop and follow on screen instructions.IF you want further help regarding this let me know!
