Question about BellSouth 1080 wp (15 Channels) 2-Way Radio

1 Answer

Poor transmission Ever since I purchased the 2 units the transmission is hard to understand. I purchased these some time ago and I just put them on the shelf and forgot about them. Now that I have a need I tried them again Doesn't work any better than the first time - even with new batteries - no matter which channel I use. Any suggestions? Or would it be more cost effective to trash them and purchase new ones? It seems to cost more to fix things now days that to purchase new. Please advise. Thank you. Milan

Re: poor transmission

Its hard to tell exactly whats wrong without some more detail. I am assuming that these are 15 channel FRS walkie talkies? If they are than what you have is 2 FM 2 way radios that operate in the 450 mhz region. FM is usually really clear at both close and far distances. With AM radios its possible for the transimission to be distorted at close distances. First you want to check if this is a transmit problem (tx) or a recieve problem (rx). The easiest way to do this is to listen to other peoples transmissions and see if you can undertand them and if they are clear. Push the monitor button or whatever function there is on that particular radio to turn the squelch off. What you want is to hear static so you will be able to hear other people talking on other handhelds that are using different tones than you or might be too far to break squelch. You want to hear everything. Check how other people transmissions sound..... if they are hard to understand like a transmission from you other handheld does. If the other radios you pic up sound clearer....try using yours again.... but give it some distance... The speakers in these thing are not the best to begin with. Try that out and let me know your results... try to desribe what your hearing in detail.... like "garbled" "distorted" "low audio" stuff like that so I get an idea of what your hearing. Try it out

Two sets of Motorola Walki Talki radios will not communicate.

In addition to the channel and privacy codes, some Motorola two-way radios have a feature called Eavesdrop Reducer where you have 3 scramble settings available; perhaps you have this set on one of sets of radios but not the other. It should be something like that because otherwise there is no reason that by setting the radios to the same channel and privacy code they wouldn't be able to send/receive to each other.

Receives fine transmission is very poor

Transmit issues can be related to a bad or poorly charged battery. It takes more energy to transmit than to receive. Try swapping batteries with a known good radio to see if it solves the problem. Clean your battery contacts with a pencil eraser and if needed replace the battery pack.

Best regards.

Intermmitant transmission on a Motorola xtni radio

Intermittent transmit can be caused by:

1) Bad or poorly charged battery. (try a known good battery and see if the problem clears up)
2) Poor connection to the battery. (clean all contacts with a pencil eraser)
3) Bad PTT internal button, radio would need repair.
4) Bad antenna. Check for breaks in the rubber covering.
5) Other internal problems requiring repair.

Best regards.

I have two uniden GMR1088-2CK radios, If I press the transmit button on the side and speak into the Mike you can see tx appear in the display, the 2nd unit receives the call, rx appears in the display and...

What this code indicate mean that your radio have have been compress with power however the can also be an indication of lower power supply but most of the time is always power compress.

What you need to do to solve this code problem is to put off the radio for some time allow it relax, then remove the battery if possible after some time replace it if you are able to remove the battery then put on the radio and operate it.

Good luck.

I have a Rhino 530hcx, the volume button is stuck...when the device powers on the device locks up....other than Garmin, where can I get this thing fixed?

I am not sure if you got this fixed but mine is doing something similiar except it is the button above the volume (aquire other users) I had to press the button repeatedly at different angles to get the button to unstick. I have had this happen a couple of times now and the whole unit freezes up. Poor design in my opinion as this unit has only seen the field 3 times.

My chatter box will not transmitt more than 1/2 of a mile

Well from my research, this unit outputs about 2 Watts. Now that's NOT a lot of transmission power, really. However I would still expect it to go more than 1/2 mile. The most important thing with any 2 way radio, is the Antenna. it needs to be mounted clear of anything at BOTH ends. Having ensured that the Power Must be 100% a bad battery will equal low output and poor sensitivity. Now if that's all OK, then the only other thing it can be is interference this can cause a lose of signal, as signals heterodyne with each other. As well check ALL wirings and connections for good contacts. Also if possible, test another unit out and see just what range you should expect?

Scratchy Transmission

The first thing which comes to mind is a bad battery pack. You might try switching the batteries between the two units and see if the problem moves to the other unit.

Secondly, if you only have two radios, it could be the opposite radio has poor receive. You could have a damaged or defective speaker in the receiving unit.

Third, check the speaker grill and mic holes on both units to see they are clear of debris.

If all these items check out, you may need to eventually replace the defective radio. However, to determine which one is defective by trying them with a known good radio.
