Whirlpool Microwave Model Number: GH5184XPS4 Technician replaced microwave fuse 2 times, and the fuse is gone on both the times on same day after using 3, 4 times. Technician says it's time to replace the microwave but doesn't gave a reasoning why the microwave fuse is failing. When I asked repeatedly, technician mentioned that the microwave is greasy (oily). But the microwave is greasy at the bottom (directly over the cook-top). The circuit board and wires inside are very clean. His reasoning doesn't make sense to me!!! What might be the reason for microwave fuse blowout?
It depends on which fuse and when it blows. Wish you had mentioned that.
But usually it's a defective door switch or door switch mount.
If the fuse blows at random times while it's cooking, it may just be a loose fuse holder. Those have to be replaced due to metal fatigue, not just squeezed tight with pliers.
If it blows as soon as you hit "Start" to begin cooking, you have a shorting high voltage capacitor.
If it blows when you open or close the door, you have a loose or defective door switch or latch.

The fuse holder may be loose.
With the microwave unplugged, if you can easily turn the fuse with your thumb & forefinger while it's in the holder, it has overheated and fatigued and should be replaced.
Simply squeezing its terminals together with pliers is not really a good solution.
When a connection is loose, heat results, which eventually melts the fuse internally.
This is usually evidenced by a very tiny ball of solder at the point where the end cap meets the body of the fuse.
You can use a generic holder - it's a lot cheaper than ordering one. The connectors should be 1/4" tabs and it should be rated at 20 amps or better.
You should be able to get one from a home center or local appliance parts store.
If it's not loose, then it may be a failing magnetron or high voltage transformer pulling too much current.

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are: - bad door switches or door switch mounts At our site, we have critical safety information, info on door switch diagnosis and replacement, and disassembly information. See our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose conneciton on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part
SOURCE: GE Spacemaker Microwave Blown Fuse replaced still no power
If you measure across the varistor leads with it still in the circuit, you should measure around 100-300 ohms, which is the DC resistance of the primary of the low voltage transformer.
If you read infinity / open the primary of the low voltage transformer is bad.
If the varistor is bad, it will be shorted and usually it will be cracked or split. This is a much simpler way to test the varistor.
Have you checked the magnetron thermal cutout (TCO) (or thermostat if so equipped) and the oven TCO? These are the leading causes of a dead GE when the fuse is okay.

SOURCE: Microwave starts by itself - NO JOKE
You have a shorting
membrane keypad.
If and when an oven is coming on or doing anything by itself, this is very dangerous and can result in a fire.
So until it is repaired,
please leave it unplugged or leave the door
open when it's not in use, and please do not leave it running
unattended.
If you (or someone you
know) might want to replace it yourself, I have uploaded a handy guide with pictures showing you what's typically
involved.
You can usually find
helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full
model number here.
If not, please reply back with your brand and model number so we can help you better.
In many brands there is a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the
control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is
very
helpful
when troubleshooting & testing.
If you would like to
have us do this repair for you, we do that for $39.95 plus part costs.
At
our Web site, we have a video
available showing how to remove a typical
over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.
Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your
model number) for more information & help.

SOURCE: Microwave oven blowing 20 amp ceramic fuse
Chances are if the varistor fails, it fails drastically causing a short circuit across the supply. It will sit across the supply (it will look like a thick ceramic capacitor) and you can check for continuity after isolating that at one end. If it shows low resistance (it should show almost open circuit with a Digital meter), replace it.
It need not be the culprit. If you are familiar working with High voltage circuits ( they are lethal inside a microwave ovens as the current capability is high here), you can discharge the doubler capacitor and isolate the high voltage diode to check for shorts in the HT area.
