If BIOS cannot see the drive, it's bad and needs to be replaced.

I can help you find a new drive online if you need further help. They are pretty easy to install.

SP3 is the third and final service pack released for Microsoft Windows XP, and it eliminates many of the security holes that previously affected XP. While Microsoft recommends that users download SP3 using Windows Update, some users are unable to do so. However, it's easy to create a Windows XP SP3 installation CD; it requires only that you download the pack from the website and burn it to a CD-R/DVD-R using an ISO burner program.
Download the SP3 installation ISO by visiting the first link listed in the "Resources" section of this article. Save it to your Desktop. Download ImgBurn and save it to your Desktop. My evo610c would not start and failed the HDD self test. I installed a new hard drive. It now passes the HDD self test, but will not go past the screen that says "not-system disk, replace and try again"....

Put the Windows CD disk into the CD-drive.
Turn the computer off.
Turn the computer on, and immediately look for a message like "press F12 to change boot order", or something like that. Tell the computer to first try to boot from the CD-drive. When it boots, the installation process will start.

How to install windows XP on my toshiba satellite A40, my bios not detect others device like my external dvd portable, cause everytime i instal with cd rom on my notebook always show 'blue screen error' or...

I'm not familiar with that specific model, but if you install from cd and get blue screens and the hard drive is not always detected, this means the hard drive is failing. You will have the same problem if you do manage to get the external cd/dvd drive to detect.

If the A40 is new enough to use a SATA hard drive (I do not think it is) then you need an XP cd with SP2 or 3 included or you will get bluescreens. But the fact that you can't get other OS to install make this an unlikely suspect.

The cd drive could be bad and not copying all the files correctly, but since you say the hard drive sometimes will not detect makes it almost certain that the hdd is the main issue.

Probably your system has been corrupted, or you have installed a software that caused your system not to function due to conflicts.

The solution that i find to solve your problem is to perform windows xp repair install, which will replace corrupted files on your system in order for you system to run properly.

Follow these step by step solution on how to perform the Windows XP Repair Install.

You should first check if you have these on your system.
1. A CD/DVD Drive.
2. A bootable Windows XP Install disk, depends on the version of your Windows XP , whether it be SP3 or SP2.
3.Idea on how to boot to your BIOS settings, you can check it using your systems manual or you should see a press button (e.g "Press F2 to SETUP").

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step by step solution on performing Windows XP Repair Install.
1. Insert the Windows XP installer on your CD/DVD Drive.
2. Restart your system.
3. Go to your BIOS Settings and set your CD/DVD drive boot priority. We will be booting to your Windows XP Install disk to perform reinstall on your system.

* Reinstalling doesnt affect your programs, but will just delete the previous windows xp system files and replace it with a new one.

4. When you are now in the Windows XP Install screen where you can select if you want to install windows xp, go to windows repair console or exit the installation. You should select "to Setup windows XP now press Enter".

Heres the screenshot as a guide.
8f39b8f.jpg

Press Enter, then when you see Searching for previous windows installation, you should select "R" to repair your installation, if you dont see any "searching for previous windows installation message" then you should check your bios settings.

After the reboot, you should set back again your BIOS to boot from your hard drive. restart your system, also you should prepare a valid windows xp cd key for that because you will be needing it confirm the setup process of your system.

After the reinstallation process, you can now boot your windows xp system nice and clean. :)
