Most likely the belt broke on the drum. Less likely the motor died. When turn the dryer on do you hear the motor running? If so you probably broke the belt. You will have to unlock the top and pull the front off. The belt rides around the drum towards the back of the dryer.
That sounds like to me the drum belt is broken..GE dryer use a belt switch that if the belt is broke will perform exactly as you describe ..as long as holding the start switch the motor will run and as soon as you release the start switch the motor will stop.
To check for a broken belt remove the top by removing the 2 phillips headed screws inside of the door at the top of it and pull off the top to see if the belt is in place and attached to the drum..if no belt seen when top off its broken and laying down in the base frame
Broken or belt has come off. If can open back and fix or replace. You may need to remove the top. Careful of the heat element, lift out drum and place new belt on motor holding it while you put the drum back keep hold of belt and place around drum replace top and should be ok. Hope this Helps
1. unplug dryer 2. popoff the top off 3. take front off (unscrew) now you can get access to the belt look in bottom of dryer there is a giude wheel for the belt 4. place belt around drum and pulley make sure you add tenstion 5. replace front and top
FIRST UNPLUG UNIT!! Remove 2 screws by filter area on main top. Grab back of dryer and pull top forward while holding dryer in place with knees. Do this to pop up
top on front left then front right. Remove 2 screws holding front panel
2 side panels. They are at top front of side panels, inside. Pull front panel out at top and pull up to remove front panel. Put belt around drum with grooved side toward drum.
