Question about Maytag MMV4205 Microwave Oven

Does stove-top need downdraft if microwave has oven-hood combo?

We are replacing microwave (that has oven-hood built-in) with like unit; existing stove-top has downdraft (center). Does replacement stove-top unit have to have downdraft? Conversely, could we get cook-top with downdraft and NOT have oven hood on new microwave (which would still be over the cook-top)? Thanks in advance for considering!

Oven hood is for conventional stove top cooking, it just pulls the smoke, oil droplets and other to the outdoor. likewise the downdraft suppose to serve the same function. If you are doing lots of deep frying, Chinese cooking or other method creating lot of smokes, the oven hood is the best. Downdraft on a name brand does do the same, but not as good as the hood.
it is your choice to have one or the other or have them both. My suggestion is to have them both. unless you are short of space.

If neither unit has an actual exhaust to the outside then it shouldn't matter which you go with. Some units actually vent the air outside, but most will just recycle the air through a filter. This is good to have on either the hood or downdraft on stove (even better). Only one is necessary to achieve your filtering so you do not need both.

Ken more microwave hood combo model 721.80409400 switch in door will not stay on when completely closed

All microwave ovens have safety switches on the doors to prevent the oven from running with the door open. Many have up to 4 of these standard microswitches. They do go bad, and can be replaced rather easily. Open your oven up, and match the existing switches with new from any electronics supplier. New switches are $2 to $3 each. A microwave technician will want to charge you on the order of $100 to come out to see what the problem is, go back to his office and order switches, and then come out to do the replacement.

My frigidaire microwave fan turned on by it self. Won't turn off. Blowing air above Microwave

Try unplugging it for a few seconds or turning off the circut breaker to it. This usually resets the unit.

The range-top light blew and now replacement bulbs

My Whirlpool/Roper microwave/hood combo has the same problem. I replaced the bulb twice, checked the bulb and it works, but not in the microwave. I wrote to Whirlpool asking about the problem. Haven't heard from them yet.

Sharp Microwave Oven over stove fan goes on by itself

Please note that FixYa is not currently notifying us Experts when Clarification Requests are answered.

So please post a
NEW question, and please include your brand name and the full model number from the tag in or on the unit, as well as the answers to these questions:

Which fan is it?

The
internal cooling fan, which comes on automatically whenever the unit is microwaving?

Or the hood vent exhaust fan which you can turn on and off manually?

Or the convection fan, if it is a convection model?

When is it coming on?

Is it coming on whenever you cook on the stove top?

Thanks!

Replace vent over stove with microwave & the

So are you saying that the vent hole doesn't line up with the microwave vent hole? I had a similar problem, it didn't matter since most of the new over the stove microwaves can vent back into the house as an option.

Microwave popped and now does not heat

Okay, first we need to separate the situations. You were boiling water on the stove and had the range hood fan running to **** up the steam. Then you put something in the microwave to heat and you heard a pop and then zip-o.

The water on the stove has nothing to do with the situation, the fan you turn on is not part of the microwave, so it has nothing to do with the microwave.

The pop you heard and then the humming suggests the magnetron failed. You said you found a blow fuse and replaced it and still nothing, right? The magnetron is the most likely culprit...I would think it is safe to say that the magnetron shorted and drew enough current to blow the fuse.

Replace the magnetron and if that doesn't work, let me know here. Good Luck!

Does stove-top need downdraft if microwave has oven-hood combo?

We have a stove with no downdraft, and a microwave with a hood above it. It works just fine. I expect you could keep your downdraft and put a microwave without a hood above it, and that would also work. I don't think, however, you can buy an above the range mocrowave oven, that slides in on brackets, which will not have a hood.

The fan starts up and runs on its own and we are cooking

That is a normal safety feature.

That's only covered in a very subtle note in the hood fan section of your owner's manual:

NOTE:If the temperature gets too hot around the
microwave oven, the fan in the vent hood will
automatically turn on at the HIGH setting to cool the
oven. It may stay on up to an hour. When this
occurs, the fan can not be turned off.

If for some reason you don't have your owner's manual, you can download it here.

Enter your model number as MV1610ST with no spaces.

You will need the free DJVU viewer to view or print your manual.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Kenmore microhood

"Microhood" seems to be a slang term for the "microwave hood" (hood fan or exhaust fan) which is normally part of an over-the-range microwave oven or range. But these should be available separately, as I seem to recall. I would contact home centers such as Lowe's, Home Depot (if they still exist), etc., or a local appliance store.
