Keeps saying "No disc" when I put a DVD in to play
I've had the unit about 4 months, I would get the "no disc" message from time to time, and I would remove the DVD, clean it, shut off the machine then turn it back on and try again. This time, its making an odd grinding noise and giving the "NO DISC" message.

Sir to clean the optical lens remove the cover of your unit but be sure to unplug the unit from ac outlet, you will see the dvd rack assembly it has a top cover if you remove the top cover you will see the optical lens, use a cotton buds to wipe the optical lens but very gentle when wiping the optical lens because it has a very small wire it may be damage and be sure not to touch the optical lens, hope this help good day and best regards.
There is either a problem with your discs or the targus unit so first: put in a disc and if it says that it's corrupt then take it out and try to play it in something else that you know works. Then if it does play, it's the targus unit's fault. If it does not play then your discs are bad.
Do you have a lens cleaning disc, if so play it. That should do the job. Also confirm if it plays audio Cd's. If it plays audio CD's it will confirm that the loading tray is Ok and all the motors are functional. All DVD players use a dual laser pick up. One is for Audio CD's / VCD's/MP3 and the other is for DVD. If you have been playing more than 1000 hours of DVD the laser unit itself could have failed. Any try the cleaning disc first. A replacement laser unit could cost you 20$ plus service charges.
dvd player keeps saying no disc when I try to play a dvd.what can i do? worked fine until about 3 months ago. started to say no disc when disc inserted but after opening and closing 3 to 6 times it would read.now it just wont read. any ideas?
I noticed that too with my "VR" (and NOT "Video") formatted disks. I don't think you can finalize the VR ones. Instead you have to use the Sony Import tool to grab the videos. If you are like me you probably remember using the import tool with Video formatted disks BEFORE finalizing them and it takes forever to copy them. They must be finalized to view on other devices, copy using the import tool quicker, etc., but VR formatted disks seem optimized for importing (and can be edited on the camcorder directly.
Try a "Laser Lens Cleaner" preferably one that uses fluid, run that thru the machine a couple times. You can find them at just about any retail store that sells CD's/DVD's or electronics. Next, if you have any liquid car polish, take a couple drops and spread on the surface of the disc. Use a microfiber towel to clean off. This helps clean off smudges and protects the disc from scratches. And it works great on damaged discs too! If your discs still do not play, then the unit needs to be repaired or replaced. Hope this helps
Jan 17, 2009 I posted this Jan 3, 2009 and seem to have a solution. Similar problem. E4 54037380 Can not record on this disc. Even though it is from the same package of DVD-Rs that I have successfully recorded to previously. Contacted them about 9 months ago without a successful resolution so I am trying again. Unit will play any DVDs, will record and play back DVD-RWs but will not record on my imation DVD-Rs 8X discs that worked fine in the past. Starts to record for a few seconds and then the error message appears (sometimes with slightly different final 4 digits of error number). Other postings have suggested: maybe a firmware update is available (I requested and we will see Emerson's response), trying slower speed discs (I am skeptical since these 8x imation discs in this same package previously worked, and the instructions say 1-16x for DVD-Rs), unplugging the unit for 1/2 hour to reset the unit (did not work), playing the last disc recorded to the end and then trying a new disc (now it recorded for about 30 seconds rather than 10 seconds but then got E4 54043E02 error message, different but still did not work). So I am hoping for something more productive out of Emerson this time. Update Jan 17,2009. Bought a CD and DVD cleaner disc with the little brushes on it. Cleaned the EWR20V5 per the cleaner instructions and tried to recod on the imation DVD-R 8X that I had used successfully in the past, no luck, same error message. So I bought another brand, maxell DVD-R 4.7GB up to 16X and IT WORKED. The instructions on pg 25 say for DVD-R "up to 16X" may be used but "4X-8X disc is recommended". Go figure, no idea why the 16X worked but they did in this case. So just a suggestion to try other brands. Someone else had suggested that also so I gave it a shot. $8 of new discs and $13 for the cleaner and I've back in business.
