Restore Default Settings Restore Default settings will default the PSP system to its original settings. A setting change may be the reason the PSP system is having difficulties. Click here to learn how to restore default settings on the PSPgo / PSP system.
Confirm UMD is properly inserted
Make sure the UMD is properly inserted with the label facing the back of the PSP system. Try removing the UMD and reinserting it. Please note, it is normal for the PSP system to make noises while it is reading from a UMD.
For PSP-1001, slide the latch to open the UMD door. For the PSP-2001 and PSP-3001, simply lift the door open.
Try playing the UMD on a different PSP system If possible, try playing the UMD on a different PSP system. If the disc still does not function properly, it might need to be replaced. If the disc does function properly, the PSP system may need service, see PSP Service for details.

Check for moisture Do not let the PSP system or any PSP® accessories come in contact with liquid. Also check for moisture condensation in the PSP system. If moisture condensation occurs, remove the disc from the PSP and do not use the PSP until the condensation has evaporated, which can take an hour or two. In general, if any part of the PSP gets wet, discontinue use until it is completely dry.
Check the regional code Check the regional code on the UMD™ Video. The only regional codes that the North American PSP® is tested to work properly with are "ALL" and "1. "

if its just an iso not an umd your son doesnt have custom firmware
if its umd and the game wont play it means you are not in specified firmware to play the game
if you have custom firmware and have a iso of the game released this year then update to gen 5.50 d2
The PSP doesnt realy have any play options when u insert a UMD it will either start atomaticly or you can choose through system settings to turn on or off the UMD auto start which enables the PSP to automaticly start or you can disable the auto start or you can press x on the UMD icon and it will start.Now when it comes to movies you can bring up the movie mode options wich alow you to rewind FF pause all that good stuff. just insert a umd and when it begins to play press triangle. hope this was helpfull
