Question about Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2) Console

Won't boot up, can't eject disk tray

I took my PS2 (old style) apart to clean the dust out of it and when I put it back together it wouldn't come on. when I turn it on I get the standard red/standby light on the front and when I press that button it turns green and the screen turns black just like it does when it normaly boots up. The blue light on the eject button comes on for a second and then turns off. The unit never boots up and I can't eject the tray. If I press the power button once quickly to reset it then the eject light blinks on again and I can hear the motor for the lazer eye move but nothing more than that. I have checked all of the ribbon cables inside to see if any weren't pluged in all the way and I have even checked the continuity of the ribbon for the power and eject buttons and everything seems fine. I am confused as to why the unit was working fine before I took it apart and now it doesn't. I was very carefull not to damage anything when I was cleaning it up and didn't get it near any ESD's. I have taken apart a few PS2's before for various reasons so I know a little about them. PLEASE HELP ME!!! I don't really have the money to get a new one and I don't want a slimline PS2; I heard they get hot and break down easy.

It most likely is the white bar under the tray that tells the system whether the tray is open or closed. I had the same problem. Make sure that bar has the little divit in the track that's under the tray and when you assemble, whereever the white bar is located, it should try to shut the tray if open and should boot if closed. Of course, make sure all your power and other ribbons are in good condition and plugged in. Hope this helps.

I once had a similar problem. What I tried was: Take it apart, go to the "power/Restart" ribbon and replace it. The other ribbons under the disk drive might also need replacing. usually what happens is the ribbon just breaks, because they are very delicate, esp. the "power/Restart" ribbon. I fixed mine simply by replacing the one ribbon, so it may work for you as well.

It is not recognizing the game disc. Try cleaning the disc and the disc drive.

To clean the disc, you can use water with a bit of dish soap if it is dirty. If it is scratched, you can try using a bit of car polish (apply, let dry and buff clean). Wash with water and dry completely before putting it back in the PS2.

Or try a disc you never use (e.g. Grand Tourismo).

To clean the disk drive, you can spray some "canned air" into it to see if you can knock the dust away from the laser/reader. DO NOT turn the can upside down when you spray. You will get liquid propellent inside the PS2 and that gets VERY cold when it evaporates. so cold that any humidity in the air will condense in your PS2 and it will surely not work for a while (even if you clean the disk).

If you are really adventurous, you can take the feet off the PS2 and then remove the screws and open everything up to do a good cleaning (it probably needs it - PS2 can be almost 10 years old!). Dont be afraid to take it apart - just use a digital camera to photo every step so you know how to put it back together.

good luck. Please rate me.

PS2 "Slimline" Can not read disk?

the problem I had is my ps2 slimline wouldn't play ps2 games. so I went on line and followed instruction took it all apart cleaned everything nothing. put it back together, for some reason I openned the ps2 where the disk goes there you can see the eye, I took a small flat heat screw driver the ones you use to fix eye glasses, and put it under the eye assembly and so gentle pushed it up. now it works perfect. not to hard you don't want to break it, I didn't even see it move. Hope this helps

Disk Error...Grinding sound when i put it in

I think you will also have trouble with reading Audio CDs. This is s sign that your Laser is dirty. The following procedure is for the older Big PS2. It will not work for the Slim PS2 model. Do not ever use Alcohol on the Slim models Laser Lens.

I hope your in the right posting area, this is for the Phat PS2 consoles with the drawer that comes out to put the CD in. Procedure is different for Slim PS2.
  1. Disconnect power and turn the case upside down.
  2. Remove the screw covers to expose the case screws. These are little square pieces or square rubber pads. You can use a thin knife blade to pry the hard plastic squares up.
  3. Remove all the screws.
  4. Remove the Warranty sticker to the right edge of the power socket.
  5. Turn the PS2 over to set it right side up.
  6. lift the top cover from the back and pull it forward slightly to clear the CD tray. Be careful of a possibly Ribbon cable attached to the lid going to the Reset/Eject buttons. Roll the cover over to the right leaving the ribbon intact.
  7. Remove the CD tray lid.
  8. Polish the Laser lens, and remove any lint or hair from the CD area. Use Alcohol and cotton swabs to clean the laser lens. By the way, Alcohol will damage a PS2 Slim lens. All lens are not created equally.
  9. Hook up the power and A/v Cables.
  10. Remove the little white disc from the CD tray lid.
  11. Place a Disc on the spindle, and cap the disc with the little white piece that you removed from the CD tray cover.
  12. Boot up the PS2 and test it, Continue cleaning until you get it to work.
  13. Put it back together, and you’re in business.
If you have trouble you can send your PS2 to a Repair shop. Click on "Repair Directory" at the bottom of this screen. then choose "Video Game Consoles". Then you pick a Good Repair shop. My shop is listed, but I cannot divulge the name in this forum. Cost will be $25 plus shipping. Shipping is usually $8.95 to the USA

Hi Tyrell,

What kind of disc is it? The PS2 can sometimes have a dirty lens and not read discs. It does not matter if the Disc is new and unscratched.
