the camera was in a case and on the bottom of a canvas bag. I had accidentally thrown the bag from the front seat unto the floor of the back seat. so it was not damaged externally.

Lens will not retract in View mode and will only retract and immediately reopen in the photo modes. Will not focus and take photo in any mode and usually shows the E18 message until the camera turns itself off.

the fact you mentioned it being dropped makes me think you know it has been... any obvious external damage to it ?

I would direct you to www.canon.com then... select support and find the manual for that camera... it should list error codes... if you cannot find it please let me know.

Camera lens won't shut

This has to be THE most common failure mode for a digital camera. Some common error messages that might show up on the LCD's of cameras with this problem include "E18 lens error" (older Canons), "ACCESS" error (Sony), "Zoom Error" (Fuji), "Lens Obstructed" (Kodak), "lens error, restart camera" or just "lens error" (nearly all camera makers lately use this variation). Some cameras might show nothing at all, but merely make a beeping noise as the lens goes out, then in, then the camera shuts off. Sometimes the lens won't even move.

Purchased 8 gb microSDHC Card with adapter for my cannon SD500 & WHILE TRYING TO FORMAT memory card GET AN ERROR saying card locked. I've moved the slide tab to the UP position but continue to get card...

The SD500 uses SD cards (and by extension, microSD cards). SDHC and microSDHC cards are electronically incompatible. While SDHC cards and microSDHC adapters will fit into the slot, they will not work in SD devices. This is a hardware issue and cannot be updated by firmware. You need to go with SD (and microSD) cards, 2GB and smaller.

Lens screen blank

Hi,

The black screen problem means the lens sensor is spoiled due to over exposure to heat. Its better to give it to cannon service centre. If your camera is under warranty period its well and good they will replace the lens sensor for free of cost.

Thank you

Unable to upload pictures to imac computer

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use iPhoto or any other photo cataloging program.
