New CS6124 cordless. Charging now. Why does a red 0 flash constantly in base screen? How do you turn it off? Should it be always flashing?

The message counter will blink until the first time you
press "Play" ( yes, even when there is nothing ( 0 ) to
listen to ).

Actually, this blinking serves the real function of alerting
you to the fact that power was off/interrupted and now
the clock (Time and Day) will need to be reset.

Good luck!

The area where how many messages you have goes from 0 to Cl

According to VTech the "CL" message alerts you to the loss of power and the need to reset the clock. Please refer to the user manual under the "Answering System Operation/Set the Clock" section to reset the clock.

If you don't have the manual, let me know and I will try to locate it.

Power was out for 6 hours

That's the code it flashes when you need to set the clock. If you don't have your manual and can't remember how to do it, you can find manuals for most GE cordless phones here. Pick your model from the list. If your exact model isn't listed, a close model number would probably be similar in its setup.
