I am having a problem with start up. Last night when I started my laptop, it started up and then the graphics got real crazy and screen went black. Tried with out battery got same results. Left it until this morning. Now press power button light comes on and fan runs but There is no HDD activity light flashing and the screen doesn't light up at all. I am guessing it is either a bad HDD and or LCD inverter. What do you think I should try first or what are your thoughts. Thanks

Re: No HDD activity and blank screen
Unfortunately i have to say yes it is time to get a new machine. That is unless you want to take it to a repair shop and have them look at it. Whatever it is it is definately hardware and yes i do believe it is the cpu which cannot be changed most of the time in notebooks. The graphics however may be expandable but i cannot tell you about your machine. You can find this by reading any material that came with the computer or by contacting the manufacturer. Sorry for the bad news but please don't forget to rate my response.

If you get a blank screen it usually indicates a corrupt or missing driver that windows is trying to load. Start the unit in safe mode and see if it completes the boot properly. If it does, just shut down and let it restart. Check the HDD activity Led while booting. If it is still flashing away merrily it may be a windows update being installed which sometimes can take ages. Some people get impatient and think its a fault and power the unit down where it starts the whole process again.
I am almost sure that it is a motherboard. When all of the lights stay solid and it seems to start, but shuts off is most likely the motherboard. You can save the data if you get a proper enclosure for the hard drive. You can call Compaq support to make sure that those signs are the motherboard.
Seems data corruption on critical files. Download my upload HDD Regenerator v1.51.iso (less than 2MB), burn onto CD (as image, not as data!). Boot from this CD and scan the whole Hard drive to recover any data corupption (may take nights!). You may need to change to Boot from CD first in BIOS.
Hello, Looks like you are on the right route, You seem very competant with this Notebook so perhaps HDD problem. Have you tried removing checking for possible loose connections then returning it carefully in its caddy. I'm not too familiar with the Acer models but had similar/same problems with Hp Nx 9010 and Nx 6125 both did exactly the same as yours right to the weird graphics. I removed the hard drives carefully tightened the caddy screws AND made sure the protective Aluminium Foil protection around the HDD was wrapped correctly as one had a lip which was creased by the way the last person fitted it. I replaced them very gently as not to bend pins or strain connections, yours maybe SATA so much easier. Good Luck! Paul 'W' Onyer~EDson(:0)~[>< U.K.
