Re: Screen problm bcoz of broken
- if an LCD screen is broken, it would show white patches.
- Ensure that the display is not in demo mode. (Usually in Demo, one half would be normal, where as the other would be a preview of some custom setting
- Check the display controls below the LCD Screen to change them.
Please try these first, then you can go for a replacement, if these don't help

If you Dell 640m is still under warranty you can call up DELL technical support they will replace it for free. You will need to provide the laptops service tag it is a 7 alpha numeric code with number 1 as the ending from here they will know if the system is under warranty, If your system is not anymore qulified for a warranty they will suggest that you get in touch with their OWR (Out of Warranty) service from this department they will be the one to quote how much the LCD will cost also the labor charge if you opt to get their service with an OnSite technician to install the LCD.
By the way have you tried to attach a good working CRT or external monitor and then check if the same thing happens if it does then it is not the LCD that is broken it's the video/graphics card, regarding your issue there are two points of failure the LCD and the Video/Graphics card. So it is better to make sure we do this necessary steps to better isolate the issue.
If you only have half of the screen first thing you need to do is go to BIOS page by pressing F2 during start-up once you see the BIG Dell logo. F2 let's you enter the BIOS if you can still see only half of the screen then that is indeed a hardware failure meaning you need to replace the LCD only otherwise go to safe mode if you can see everything here normally except for everything here is BIG then that means you just have a software issue and you need to uninstall the driver for the video card and then restart the system. After restart reinstall the driver for the video card and then restart again by this time you should have a normal screen and issue is fix. Reply if everything goes as plan aiyt.
i still got a lot on my sleeves to fix your issue.
