Color problem with Sony Grand WEGA 42WE655

The color on my 4 year old Sony Grand WEGA has gone haywire. All greens have turned blue and vice-versa. The other colors that remain (mostly dull reds) are washed out. I was told I need a new optical block for a cost in excess of $1000 - no way!!. Meanwhile, the color has gone bad on my computer monitor too - nothing but olive green, yellow and black - and the color on an older Sony Trinitron is flickering (these are in a different room). Could these color proglems all be related - possibly they've been magnetized? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Well, there probably isn't any relation between the two problems occuring exept for the timing. Magnetism won't affect a rear projection LCD.

I would say that your description is a bit odd, though. Usually on this model, there is a blue blob that shows up, eventually turning into a blue haze, and a star pattern of stuck pixels. It almost sounds like you have a bad set of component cables. On the SXRD's, they usually turn green.

Does it do it on all inputs (including the channels)? If it does, then it is the optical block. If it does not, then I would suspect that it is cable-related. If it is the optical block, then there is no way that any input can be different from the others (except for digital/analog differences, but those are usually obvious with patterns vertically on the screen).

If it does not look the same on all inputs or channels, change out whatever cables you are using. A loss of the red or blue cable in a component can give the symptoms you describe.

I hope this helps you...

Hi,it seems you are experimenting a light engine problem. This is how your tv works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLLHnQ4y-wo So basically the 3 Lcd chips that create the colors and image are going bad and that is why you get that color discoloration.Contact Sony or look for your light engine online.God bless you and your house!

Sony 60" HDTV Plasma WEGA....Picture Problem

My guess is that you're not missing the color it just appears muted... That problem is a common one in both the 50 and 60 inch models. And if you change video mode with nothing hooked up you'll see a faint color where none should be...
That's simply dust in the optical block on one of either the red, blue or green lcd panel. Wipe it down with a non-linting cloth and a "light" amount of windex and you're back in business...
But check it out by switchin through the video modes with nothing hooked up.. The faint color you see if the lcd panel that's having the most problem and the one that's muting your green.

SCREEN IS BLUE IN HALF AND THE REST IS BLUE FOG

You did the right thing with the bulb. The current problem is something different altogether. My guess is that your TV is 2 plus years old. The Grand Wega has an inherrent latent defect, which Sony is not acknowledging or taking resposablity for, in that the optic block distorts after a certain number hours of use. I am curretly working to get an equittable resolution but Sony is stonewalling - would like to get a class action going for the KDF. To learn more Goggle MSNBC " Problems with Sony Gran Wega "

Blue haze and dull yellow patches on screen

The light engine in your set has gone belly up. It is a very expensive repair. Good news is that on a whole bunch of models like yours Sony has extended the waranty on the light engine. Check with a local authorized Sony service center and give them the model & serial number and you might get a free ride. If I were a betting man I'd take odds on 'you're in luck'. LOL

Blue color flowing from side and bottom into picture

Sony tech support (no charge) said it was definitely not the lamp.
Their suggestion- By unplugging the TV for a minute then turning back on, the blue color was substantially but not toally reduced.
Perhaps there is an electrical charge building up distoring the color by having the TV in the ready mode for too long and by unplugging, the charge dissipates?
No other phone solution recommended other than calling for repairs.
