Toshiba TV 32AV502U - closed captioning

We just purchased this TV, and this is a minor thing, but a bit of a pain, as we have a hearing challenged person who likes to mute the TV so we can have a conversation.

When we mute the TV, the closed captioning does not come on - even on channels that we KNOW are closed captioned. The only place they appear is on the HD channels.

We do not want the captions on all the time.

the cable company should have no problem sending someone out to help you and show you how to do this at no charge. I find that some installers just get the job done and leave.

HDMI cable hooked up, now CLOSED CAPTIONING is stuck on!

It has got to be the box. I would try to contact Scientific Atlanta if any way possible. The TV doesn't choose what inputs it shows CC.In other words, it would show it on all Inputs if it was the TV. Good luck and Thanks

Misspelling on Closed Caption

Yes - perhaps yoga, or a nice massage. You have some seriously uptight members!! It is either a computer error in translating a word from speech, or a human mistyping a word.... but it's all at the broadcast end, you really have no control over it. Try looking up "closed captioning" on Wikipedia.... and relax, the world is not perfect :)

Closed caption problem

I had the same issue... here's what I did.  If power off your cable box, then press the menu button, there's a selection to enable or disable Closed Captioning.  This works for both HD series Motorola boxes Comcast offers, at least in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.  Hope this helps!

Turn off closed caption on input(component) on Sharp Aquos 42"

This is what just worked for me. If I can figure this out, anyone can :) We have comcast cable hddvr box, motorola 3416, and a new Samsung HD Plasma, but try this no matter what you have...
turn your cable box off, and THEN press menu on the box. A white screen popped up and this is where I had to scroll down to and disable the captions. I couldn't believe this worked since I thought the cables were enabled on my TV since my captions were covering my cable menus, but it was the cable. I hope this helps.
