I have smudges that appear horizontially in a repeating patter

I have three or four repeating horizontal smudges that appear on all printed material .

I just bought this printer refurbished for a private seller.

I replaced the toner and it does the same thing.

Could it be the drum or something else.

What should I look at next? Thanks

Hi fpugliese630:

1. Remove the paper tray and look inside the printer on the upper part and you see two rubber feed rollers, (they should be a white color) if they have toner on them that could be one of you problems, you would have to clean or replace them if they are worn.

2. you can run whats called a half test, print any document and while the document is printing open the front cover when you think that the paper is under the toner cartridge so the printer will stop. look at the printed page to see if the mark is there. If the mark is not there than you have a problem with the fuser assemble.

Note*
Make sure that the paper path is clean.

Id also take a look at the charge rollers. the charge rollers can be easily replaced and located. drop the top front door down about half way. notice the grayish roller hanging from the arms. dont touch or clean this roller because it will cause it to stop working and cause smudging on your prints. if the roller is multi colored, orange-ish or has lots of toner on it then Id say its time to replace the charge roller.

There is a horizontal line grey in color

If this a P2035 printer using a toner cart with a drum in it. The drum has been exposed to light or has a smudge on it. take the cart out and look at the drum. This is a round light blue tube located at the bottom of the cart. It is the drum because it is the only thing in the printer that will print a defect three times on the paper. You could also print about 0 black sheets of paper through the printer and it will go away. This is because the drum coating is in layers like an onion. You must get rid of the exposed layer to get to on that has not been exposed to light.

Are you using third party ink? make sure your ink is xerox OEM. This will clogg up the inkjets and ruin the print head for ever, If you have always used the third party ink then you might want to get a new print head. . If you have used xerox ink then It sounds like the magenta reservoir has spilled over the cyan. This is caused by moving the printer and not waiting for the cool down procedure. Also you might want to change the print head wiper. If the print head wiper is over used it won't clean the print head properly and what that causes is for ink to build up and causes smudge. also make sure the drum maintance kit is still in good shape. (its the yellow roller on the right side of the printer. Well hopefully this helps .

Paper won't feed

Inside of the machine is dirty.
If the inside of the machine is dirty, the printed paper may be smudged.
Follow the steps described below to clean the inside of the machine.
1. Ensure that the machine is turned on and there is no paper loaded in the Auto Sheet Feeder.
2. Place A4/Letter-sized plain paper in landscape orientation, horizontally fold it in half.
3. Unfold the paper, and load the paper in the Auto Sheet Feeder with the inverted-V edge down.

4. Select <Bottom plate cleaning> from <Maintenance>.
5. Select <Yes> on the Bottom plate cleaning confirmation screen and then press [OK].
Paper will be ejected.
If protrusions inside the machine are stained, wipe ink off the protrusions using a swab or such like.
* Important
Before cleaning, be sure to turn OFF the machine.
Paper feed roller is dirty.
Follow the steps described below to clean the paper feed rollers.
1. Ensure that the machine is turned ON and there is no paper loaded in the machine.
2. Select <Roller cleaning> from <Maintenance>.
3. Select <Yes> on the Roller cleaning confirmation screen and then press [OK].
The paper feed roller will rotate as it cleans.
4. Repeat this operation twice.
5. Load three or more sheets of A4/Letter-sized plain paper lengthways in the Auto Sheet Feeder.
6. Select <Roller cleaning> from <Maintenance>.
7. Select <Yes> on the Roller cleaning confirmation screen and then press [OK].
The paper that is loaded in the machine will feed through the machine and be ejected.
8. Repeat Steps 5 to 7 three times.
Inappropriate paper type is used.
Check to see if the paper you are printing on is too thick. See Paper Types You Cannot Use.
Note that smudging may occur at the top and bottom edges of the paper when using Borderless Printing. Ensure that the paper you are using is compatible with Borderless Printing.
Thick paper is used.
When printing on thick paper, set the Paper Thickness Lever to the right.
This widens the gap between the FINE Cartridge and the paper. Try this maneuver if the printed surface is scratched.
Media is curled.
If all four corners or the printing surface of the paper is curled, the paper may become dirty or may not feed properly. Use the paper after correcting paper curl as follows.
1. Place the printing surface face up (A), and cover it with a sheet of non-printing regular paper to avoid damaging the surface.
2. Roll up the paper in the direction opposite to the paper curl as per the figure below.
3. Check the printing paper to confirm if the paper curl is eliminated to within approximately 2 to 5mm / 0.08 to 0.2 in (B).
It is recommended to print on curl-corrected paper one sheet at a time.
The media type is not selected correctly in the printer driver.
On the [Main] tab of the printer driver, ensure that the [Media Type] selected matches the paper loaded.

In the [Print] dialog box of the printer driver, select [Quality & Media] from the pop-up menu, and then ensure that the [Media Type] selected matches the paper loaded.
Paper is loaded incorrectly.
Load in the portrait orientation regardless of the print direction of the Auto Sheet Feeder.
Ensure that paper is loaded correctly. Slide the paper guides against the paper stack.
