For the love of God get rid of this death trap.

It could be that it was meant to have a neutral earth, ie the neutral is connected to earth at the substation and house inlet and somehow the live and neutral has become reversed at the plug.

You have seen the case becomes live, this may be happening due to leakage current or a short as you say.

Either way the earth was there for a reason, to stop the case from becoming dangerous and you have removed that protection.

Neither the heater element or motor windings should have continuity to the case, I'd disconnect and check these out individually to isolate the problem and repair it, then put the earth connection back before using the freezer.

when its running how hot are the sides the starting amps are too high and 1.5 running amps ain't bad now the the cut in cut out are too high if you look on the dial that the mid point settings that's where you should have it not on 1 1 is hot set it on the straight line that's where you should do all your testing colder settings go up not down you could be overheating the compressor by making it come on too quick the freezer should be about -10 or so do you see any gaps in the gasket

SOURCE: freezer compresser short cycling pressures at 45 150

You have a restriction in the system or a overcharge.
Recover the system.
Replace the filter/drier.
Pull a deep vacuum.
Recharge according to the nameplate charge.

SOURCE: freezer compressor running, but no cooling

If the compressor is running and there's no cooling, chances are you have a sealed system leak somewhere. Meaning the machine has lost it's refrigerant charge. Pretty much need a set of gages at this point and start checking for potential leaks.

SOURCE: freezer defrost cycle

If the defrost timer sticks in the defrost mode, yes. Normal defrost time is 30 minutes or less depending upon which timer is installed.
If it happens again, locate the defrost timer and turn the dial manually to see if the compressor comes back on. If so,replace the timer.
It is probably on the rear near the compressor. Some are under the front behind the dust guard.

Amana freezer has run well for 40yrs. Had weather related power outage for 6 days. Now freezer won't run. Is using about 125 watts, compressor is hot, pressing ear to cabinet reveals "something" is going...

Hi,
What often happens in an outage like that is you get a rapid on/off cycle about three times or so... This puts extra stress on the compressor because the pressures do not have time to equalize before the compressor tries ot restart. Considering th age of your compressor either that or a low voltage situation was the final straw for your compressor and it died...
The best you can do at this point would be to allow the compressor to completely cool, as in unplug it for 12 or more hours, then try to plug it back in to restart it, it sometimes works...

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

My amana upright gets cool but not cold enough to freeze probably not even as cold as a fidge. the problem started when we moved and stored it out in a shop that was partially heated. since then we have...

Good day,
Somewhat handicapped not knowing if it's a conventional freezer or frost free.
1. If it's frost free check to see if the fan motor is running in the freezer compartment.
2. As well if it has a fan motor in the compressor compartment, see if it is running as well.

3. If it is a conventional model, make sure it is turned on and make sure it is running. If running, then it has lost it's refrigerant charge or the compressor has lost it's pumping capacity.

4. If it is item 3, then unless it's less then 5 years old, the sealed
system/compressor problem is so pricey that it's not a practical repair. If under 5 years Amana will pay for these repairs, whether it's conventional or frost free.

I have an Amana upright freezer (model esu13dl)

I have some experience in refrigeration (since I was 16 to now ,I'm 41 years old) and we only replace the grommets when replacing the compressor ,I don't recomended to do that in that little room ,you can bend or break a copper pipe and then will be a big problem.

Loud bang

John,
What you are hearing is popping caused by thermal expansion inside the evaporator enclosure during its' defrost cycle.
Depending on your make and model, it'll go into defrost every 8 to 12 hours of compressor "run time". That is, the defrost timer "monitors" how long the compressor runs and after it accumulates the pre-set "run time", the timer then shuts the compressor off and initiates its' programmed defrost routine. This routine lasts for 20-30 minutes, or until the defrost thermostat opens.
The defrost routine sends 120 volts to a heating element in the evaporator compartment which gets red hot. This sudden temperature change (from below freezing to warm) causes the cabinet to expand slightly. That's when you hear the "Pop".

I hope this helps, John. Thanks for using FixYa, and don't forget to rate my answer.

Woods Freezer Makes Loud Vibrating Noise at 10pm each night

sounds like either your compressor is loose and just rattling or the compressor is off balance and its rolling around inside the seal can.  take a look at it when it is making the noise.   put your hand on the compressor (careful   might be hot)   if it feel like it running smoothly then i would call an electrician cause that kinda puts me out of ideas without being there...  sorry

Good luck
