You can use the Fn+F3 Keys to decrease and Fn+F4 Keys to increase the Volume. If the Audio is not working after increasing the Volume using the Function Keys, please try re-installing the Audio Driver in the Computer to fix this issue.
Please download the file, double click on it to begin the installation and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation. After installing the Audio Driver, please restart the Computer for the settings to take the effect.
This should fix the issue.

It must be a Volume device drive problem,please try to update your volume device drive software,find your original dell Inspiron 1420 volume device driver software or download it from www.dell.com

From the Task bar located at the bottom of your computer click once on the "Volume" icon.

Uncheck the "Mute" box. If this does not resolve the issue, proceed to step 3.

Right click on the "Volume" icon.

1st check your PC if audio is fine with headphones or some other speakers , then check your control panel and test sounds compatibility might that you are using wrong speaker setting in the PC. look for advance settings into the sound driver ..you also try on the volume icon ...propieties...check the mute case ...the volume ......from advance settings boots it ...but it might be also not comp. with linux
