Does the canon pixma ip1200 need both the black and the colour cartridges in to print ?

You need both cartridges. It is a paradox that you need both cartridges to even scan on the mfp,s

Black and Colour Ink Low Messages - Canon MP180

You have to look online for the canon tool to reset the ink counters. When you refill these cartridges you have to run this program in order to re-use the cartridges.

Canon ip1200 black cartridge wont recognize after i refill

Dear lim,
Here a solution for you. The cartridge of this printer has memory chip that store ink level data inside. Once the cartridge is empty we cannot restore ink level data to be full. To continue using refilled cartridge you need to deactivate ink level detection function first. Perform this step: when the message 'The following cartridge cannot be recognized' appears press Resume/Cancel button. Do this for each cartridge you refill;if you refill both black & colour cartridge do this tip two times (once for each cartridge).
Please rate this as fixya ok.

Ink or printers problem

Most likely the ink cartridges for this printer have a chip on them. This chip tells the printer how much ink is left and when it is low or out, you must replace the whole cartridge otherwise if you just refill it, the chip will still report the same amount of ink as it doesn't go by the actual ink level inside the cartridge, it determines the ink level by calculating approximately how much ink has been used while it was printing. So it doesn't matter how full the cartridge is, unless you replace the cartridge or reset the counter on the chip somehow, it will still display the calculated amount not the actual amount.
