In case you have removed the empty colour cartridge from the printer put it back it will allow you to print. If the empty cartridge is still there and its not allowing you to print in black ink then you need a new colour cartridge .

I had a Epson printer that would not print or even allow me to use the scanner because the colored ink was out. Even though I had full black ink, it still would not let me print until i replaced the colored ink.
Did you use Epson Genuine Cartridges? ALL…. Epson & Brother Requires Genuine Cartridges. !!!!!!!! That sounds like your problem. In Purchasing Epson's CX 5400, CX4600, & CX7400 and more, I found out that Epson does not like Generic Printer Cartridges. I also Purchased a Brother MFC-240C All-In-One InkJet Printer. That also does not like Generic Print Cartridges. Color that should be Yellow, will turn out Green, Blue Brown, etc. These printers have a CHIP that will detect if it is Generic or Genuine. When they see it’s Generic Cartridges, it will print lines thru the words, stripes across the picture and also do a mix match with the colors. It also will not let you print anything, if only one of the cartridges is empty.
I wanted to print only Black, and would not let me, because I did not have any ink in one of my cyan cartridges. Go figure.
That's what these Companies do., so they can keep selling the ink cartridges. Some Printers, are able to use Generic, and some are refillable. Some you can refill them up yourself and I heard, quite MESSY.
So I learned, thru trial and error, that you must use the ORIGINAL Genuine Cartridges for these PRINTERS. Some people say some models work fine compatible, but not mine.......
I had to replace the printer, but Epson, Lexmark & Brothers are always on sale. My Brother & Epson cost me $50.00 with Rebate. . IF YOU ARE USING GENERIC CARTRIDGES, MAYBE IT WOULD BE BETTER IF YOU DISABLE THE INK MONITOR. This is the only advice I can give you. The next step would be to disassemble the Epson, and clean the Pads/Heads. Yes it will still print with black provided that your computer still detects the colored cartridge tanks. If you are certain that there is still some ink left on the colored ones, take them one by one and shake them hard as if you are trying to distribute the ink evenly. After that, you need to do a test print to utilize the colored inks.
I have an Epson color printer ,but not the same model. If any of the colors of ink or out it will not allow one to print anything until the cartrage is replaced. It is built that way to stop the ink for totally running out . I just read this in this months comsumers reports magizine. Sorry.
Epson printers will clean the head if the printer is not used for a long period say a week. The only option is to switch on the computer and printer and give a noozle test every 2 -3 days. This will stop the printer from doing a head cleaning which uses the following amount of Ink
Thus if the head cleaning is done 4 times your black is half empty.
thus as the saying goes either you switch on the printer every day or loose the printer
I also had the same problem and now this is what I am doing, and now the cartridge is giving a good amount of prints that too image quality
No, the Epson Stylus C43SX design requires that both cartridges are present and working i.e. not empty. If you wish to always print from one cartridge e.g. black, you can refill the empty color cartridge with distilled water and reset it to full. For this you will need a chip resetter (very cheap - see e-bay for example). Do not run with a dry reset cartridge - you'll end up with a damaged print head.
epson printers won't really print if one cartridge is not detected or detected as empty. the only option that i can suggest to you is that, buy a continous ink kit at any ink refilling station in your place. i highly recommend that dont leave a cartridge empty with ink cause it might clog your printhead. using a continous ink system's cartridge is auto reset, whenever the printer says that the cartridge is empty, it will automatically resets itself. ink refill kit comes with 100+ml of ink per color i think. and it is much cheaper using original epson ink.
