The make does not matter - in fact Dell does not make their own hard drives.

Just be sure you get the right type, most have IDE type connectors with pins but some of the newer models are using SATA drives. Yours is an older model so it should take IDE.

I have an oldDell Latitude C610, when I try to start it it trys to start but then it beeps once and then nothing yet the hard drive is still making a noise

Hi. You might need to run diagnostics on the hard drive by restarting your computer then press F12 on the Dell logo and select "Boot to Utility Partition".

I'm suspecting that you have a busted hard drive and if it is, then just replace the hdd.

Dell Latitude C510/c610 Can this notebook book from the USB Port? I want to install Fedora Linux on my newly repartitioned HD but I can't read the DVD (don't have DVD drive available).

When you want to boot to the USB hard drive just have the drive installed, reboot the system, select the appropriate function key to go to boot options (should tell you what to press in the beginning of boot up) and select USB hard disk.

An important thing to note: Most Linux distributions won't boot from a USB hard drive or thumb drive without a special program for unpacking it to the USB Hard disk. Check with the distribution website for special instructions.

Good Luck,

Dell Latitude C610 doesn't recognize hard drive

when you took out the old hard drive
there is a black hard drive connector
this would have holes to push on to the new hard drive
without this, it will not plug into the motherboard
be careful if one of the pins breaks the hard drive wont work

Hard Drive Read Failure

No--I would say that the hard drive has gone bad on you.
The BIOS can see a hard drive, but it can't tell if it's any good.
If it's defective, well--you see what happens!

External hard drive

Yes, no problems, if the USB hard drive draws too much power you will need to attach an external power supply, usually the small laptop 21/2" drivers don't need external power supplies.

HDD prob

The machine should recognize that there is a hard drive there, if it doesn't then the hard drive has crashed or failed. You will have to replace it.
