I installed a new hard drive in my a1310n desktop. When I try to use the restore disc I get a message saying "no operating system, please insert system disc". How do I install operating system if it's on the restore disc that I'm using?
You need to change boot options in BIOS. Press required F key during boot. Look on the screen since Function keys vary with systems. In boot options make optical drive (CD\DVD) 1st. Save and reboot. You should get "Press any key to boot from CD". Note: Some systems have an ad-hoc boot option during startup. Thus eliminating the need for BIOS change.
I've done that Jose. It comes up with the "press R to do a restore". I press "R" and it does the "partition" part, then it says "no operating system, insert system disc and press enter". Then it goes right back to the beginning and starts the whole thing over again. Thanks so much for trying to help. Any more ideas??
Try the other disc drive if this a dual Optical drive system?
It only has ONE disc drive, however I used a external disc drive and got the same thing. NEXT IDEA?? LOL.
Test the install disc on another PC. It must be bootable.

Files copy errors during the XP installation process are often an indication of BAD RAM.
If you have dual RAM modules, try install with 1 memory module installed

Hi Mark,
External drives have come a long way and run almost as fast as many
internal drives. If your need for extra hard drive space is pretty
much driven by the Microsoft Flight Simulator game, you could get by
with using an external drive. A few things, though: Make sure your
system is supporting USB 2.0 (it should be) and that the drive runs at
least 5400rpm. External HDD's run off standard 120v AC power.
Otherwise, if you want to get an internal drive, you can certainly get
another ATA-133 drive. But SATA is faster and your computer may
support it. The D530 CMT (convertible mini-tower) definitely does. But
there is also the D530 SFF (small form factor), and D530 USD (ultra
slim desktop)--not sure if those are rigged for SATA support.
As for maximum hard disk size supported, that's up to the operating system (e.g. Windows XP vs. Vista). You likely won't need any bios updates because of a new hard drive installation. However, its not a bad idea to review the BIOS update release notes to see what they're addressing.

You need to do a number of things:
1) You need to carefully remove the door and the whole front face of the desktop (the front face opens like a door it swings open from left to right)
2) Once you have the front pannel open take a philips screwdriver and unscrew the memory card readers that is show in front of the deskop (there is one screw holding this card reader in place probably on the upper right hand corner.
3) Carefully remove the card reader by jiggiling it lightly till the unit comes off.
4) After you remove the card reader, you will immediatly see the hard drive directly behind the reader that you just removed.
5) Now look inside the desktop (because you removed the right hand side door: the big one that alows you to see inside the pc) and remove all cables from this hard drive before you read #6 below
6) Inside the desktop, Locate the hard drive, put your hand on the back of it and lift on the green plastic part along side the hard drive where you can see the harddrive screw which is on a metal track stopped by a green plastic stopper.
7) Lift the green plastic stopper and push the back of the hard drive to the front of the desktop.
8) Unscrew all screws from old hard drive and rescrew them on the new one in the exact same spots at the old hard drive.
9)Once you finish screwing on the screws, slide the new hard drive back from where the old one was
10) reconnect all data cables and power supply cable.
11) follow steps 7 thru 1 to put unit back together again. Go thru steps 7 thru one backwards
I hope this helps

I have tried all that. Thank you. Any other ideas I could try?? I'd really love to get this up and running.
I tried it in another computer and it started right up. I went back to the "troubled" computer and now after starting the recovery process it says "no operating system, insert system disc and press enter". Tried to start it with the F-10 key and got a new message that says "Could not verify CDROM image". This is from BOTH the recovery disc I made when I bought the computer AND the new recovery disc's I ordered from HP. Hope your having a wonderful Thanksgiving and Thanks again.
