Question about Olympus WS-100 Digital Voice Recorder
I recently bought an Olympus Digital Voice Recorder WS-100. It's only two months old. I tried it out and things seemed to work fine. Now, even with brand new batteries, it won't even switch on. Every combination I try of switching it on and resetting the hold button results in absolutely nothing. It won't even do anything when I try to plug it into the USB port on my computer. It just died, even though I only used it one time, only for testing and practicing. Any ideas how to fix this, because I'd really rather not shell out for a brand new one if I don't have to. Thanks.
Hi - I had exactly same problem with Olympus WS-110 voice recorder - I figured battery terminals were not making proper connection with terminals of device - I got a cotton bud soaked in nail varnish remover (acetone = solvent) and wiped the battery terminals on the device very thoroughly - this worked a treat - the recoder now swtitches on and works perfectly.

We had a similar problem (it wouldn't turn on), and it turned out that we hadn't taken off both layers of clear packaging from the batteries. It now works.

I have the exactly same problem here. I used it just very few times and not it won't power on. I've heard of many people with the exact same problem. I will not trust on Olympus devices anymore.

Did you find a solution to this? It has happened to me as well with a WS-811, and I have a lot of important interviews on it (I am a journalist). Will never rely on one of these again, that is for sure!

The recorded file comes up as a text document on my computer instead of a recording? Do I need to download some sort of program on my computer?

Did you have a firmware cd with it? Basically you have lost the software which runs it so need to reload it. I would contact the manufacturer and see if they can send you the software and tell you how to load it.

I wrote this for the Olympus VN-3100PC although it may work with this device as well.
This problem can typically be solved by unplugging the device from your computer's USB port and plugging it in to another USB port on the same computer.
Also be sure you have Olympus Digital Wave Player installed and open with your Transfer Options set to Auto Transfer. To do this, follow the steps below:
Open Digital Wave Player > select Transfer from the menu > select Transfer Options > under Auto Transfer, check the box which reads "Transfer all audio files after detecting Recorder."
