CD/DVD Burners for Gateway 835GM PC

Could someone please advise whether I made a mistake or not.

I ordered the following CD/DVD Burners in SATA

Lite-On iHAS120-08

ASUS DRW-20B1ST

Will these work in my PC?

My Motherboard is an Intel [Big Lake] 945G no CPU RO

I believe I made a mistake in ordering SATA Drives.

I think my present drives are IDE.

Please advise if I should return these drives for IDE, or is there a way to connect them without any major problems.

Thank you for your help in this matter.

Your system has 4 SATA controllers which I mentioned on your previous question. Yes, they will work.

SATA drives are faster than the IDE interface drives.

Here is your motherboard:

The SATA connectors are those 4 approx. 1" vertical black connectors about a 3rd of the way down. The IDE connector is the horizontal one right on top of them.

As long as the SATA controller is set to Automatic in the BIOS, you should not have any problems. Also, the new drive should come with a SATA cable.

If your motherboard has SATA connectors you don't have a problem. If it does not, you have a minor problem.
You can add the ability to use SATA drives to your computer by purchasing a PCI SATA controller. This is a card that sits inside your computer in one of the PCI slots and you just plug your drives into this. There are a number of models available for under $20.

Where can i get a free diagram of the motherboard layout for the Gateway 835GM?

There are many things to be considered by having a problem with your boot up. First common factor is infected with the virus of your operating system or corrupted, then possible your hard disk drive is having a mechanical trouble due to improper shut down or by hanging up. If this is the case, you have to reformat your computer operating system and or change you hard disk drive in order to fix the said problem.

How to connect a cd rom/dvd

If your CD / DVD is powered on Ok then you are missing the data cable connection which will be either a SATA (small connector) or IDE (much larger connector) both of which plug in to your motherboard....Look at the CD / DVD and try to identify which type of connector you are missing then look for an unconnected cable of the same type within your case.

Processor upgrade

You have a P4 Processor.... a 3.0 was the fastest. I would not upgrade the processor. You can however upgrade the Motherboard if you can do it yourself. That will take you to a SATA Hard Drive system and allow you to afford some faster RAM and Cheeper RAM.

Another option: get 1 gig of ram, new Hard Drive and Win7. Speed improvement will be double.

I need to replace the dvd/rw in my GT5026E but cant find the original. What will replace it

Any 5 1/4 DVD / CD drive will work. You may have to order drive rails depending on the setup of Gateways tower. You should have 2 - 5.25" Drive Bays available. The original model number and name for the DVD drive is 5648 DVD Burner Combo Drive .

The tower does have internal SATA so you can replace it with any internal SATA DVD rom you like, it doesnt have to be Gateway, and it can even be blu-ray.

Hope this helps

My dvd drive does not work

If the drive is seen in BIOS, but not seen in the OS< then this should resolve.

Just run the fix it utility and reboot.
If the drive is seen, but will not read media, try booting to the drive using a WIndows CD. If it will not boor to bootable media, replace the drive

Installing SATA optical drives on a Gateway 835GM Pc with an Intel [Big Lake] 945G Motherboard.

Enrico,

I would just physically remove the drives and the connecting cable(s) and reboot your computer. Look in the device manager and make sure they are gone. They should be gone, but if not, you can then remove them from it.

There is no certain slot to install the new drives, just use the next 2 slots. You can set the SATA Bios setting anytime. I think most defaults are set to Auto anyway.

I would leave the jumpers on CS.

As far as drivers, I would assume there will be software with drivers enclosed with the new drives. Windows will recognize the new drives, and when it asks about drivers, there should be a "Have Disk" selection if you get a CD with the drive. (If no CD, have it install/search for the best drivers.)

There will no doubt be installation instructions enclosed with the new hardware too. Read it thoroughly. It may answer much of what you ask here. Good luck.

Install more memory, install new dvd/cd drives

As far as the memory in your system goes, each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-8500, DDR2 PC2-5300, or DDR2 PC2-6400 with a maximum of 1GB per slot. You can add two 1GB modules to your present configuration if you choose.

For complete info go to: Crucial for Gateway 835GM

You can also go to www.crucial.com and run their scan feature. It's safe and works well.

Note that you should install memory in matched pairs, so if you should buy 2 more 512MB modules, make sure they are the same kind/type. Also realize that should you upgrade to 4GB of RAM, unless you have a 64-bit OS, it may not recognize all 4GB.

As for the drives, any "big box" electronics store will have the drives you need/want. Even Wal-Mart has a decent selection of internal drives. The drives should work with no problem. Gateway and other companies put fancy bezels on the front, but they have buttons and hinged doors that will allow most drives to be used. One thing you need to make sure of is what type of drive you need. That is, what type of controller is used, either IDE or the newer SATA. If you are not sure, comment back and i will try to research it further.

Disk drive no longer works on my Emachine..was advised to contact you..have tried a number of CDs there is no sound and no visual...would need to know whether it's repairable or replaceable..thank you

Cd and DVD drives are so cheap these days it's not really worth messing about with them.
Replacing one is very simple process, if you need any help let me know.
Have a look here at newegg to get an idea of how cheap they are now:
