I have an older model Kenmore washer - stopped spinning and aggitating - I took the control panel off, how do I reach the belt?

If the spin cycle works, but the unit only fails to aggitate......the problem is most likely a clutch or transmission problem. If the unit neither spins or aggitates, you could have a broken belt or even a defective lid switch. Sometimes a model will have broken dogs, or cogs in the aggitator base. To check this, with the machine off..reach into the machine tub..grab the aggitaror and try to turn it manually by hand. If you can turn it and also feel a sensation such as a gear slipping or teeth not properly taking hold or meshing, the cogs or dogs may need to be replaced that are under the aggitator itself. Its going to be the coupler very likely..your washer uses a coupler and does not have a belt.

If your washer does not drain you need to check this parts.

1. Inspect the drain hose for kinks
2. Test the timer control
3. Test the lid switch(some models)
4. Inspect the water pump
5. Inspect the drive belt(belt drive only)
6. Inspect the motor coupler

If the drain hose reaches more than about 4 inches into the laundry tub, cut off the excess. If your drain hose is lower than the washer's cabinet, install an air gap/siphon break assembly.

I called a repair man. The machine, it turns out is gear driven, and all the gears were shot.

Set the timer for final spin and turn it on.
Does it pump out the water?
If the answer is yes, it pumps out water use this video to replace the direct drive coupling.

REPLACED THE LID SWITCH

I have a Series 80 and when I lift the lid it does not stop aggitating when in wash mode. When I lift the lid it does stop spinning when in rinse mode. As designed.

To stop wash-mode aggitation at lid-lift, using the existing lid switch and other electrical components, is not easy and not recommended. I can think of a way to do it (triple-pole lid switch) but I will not detail the idea .. for safety concerns.

To stop aggitation, simply use the main settings dial control. You'll save money and possibly prevent a fire hazard!
