What happens when you press the "Subtitle" button on the DVD remote control several times after you insert a subtitle-enabled DVD?
If you don't have the manual handy for your DVD player, I've added a link for the Toshiba SD-5000KU. The Subtitle button is described on page 13, but the description only tells how to turn subtitles on. However if the programming is typical, pressing the button repeatedly cycles through a series of language options with "Off" at the beginning or end of the list. Otherwise, it may be programmed to enter a subtitle menu that you navigate with the direction arrows (page 14). Toshiba SD 5000KU Owner Manual
The show u are watching must have a CC sign, before u even can get close captioning. The show's have a CC sign, tries press the button on the remote CC 1,2,3,4,5 on one of these numbers will have close captioning for the show.
Closed captions only show when you're watching TV. If you're watching a DVD they're called subtitles. Both are controlled by a button on the remote. Closed captions are controlled by a button that's labeled "cc" or "ccd". Subtitles are controlled by a button that is labeled "subtitles" or "sub". Subtitles can also be turned off by going into the DVD setup menu.

It has got to be the box. I would try to contact Scientific Atlanta if any way possible. The TV doesn't choose what inputs it shows CC.In other words, it would show it on all Inputs if it was the TV. Good luck and Thanks
go into your menu and find closed caption, someone has accidently set the closed caption mode to text, when the on screen display of channel or volume goes away the box appears. turn off the closed caption feature or switch it to something other than "text" mode, and your box will go away.
I had the same issue... here's what I did. If power off your cable box, then press the menu button, there's a selection to enable or disable Closed Captioning. This works for both HD series Motorola boxes Comcast offers, at least in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. Hope this helps!
