Xbox 360 Disc Read Error after Magnet Fix

Ok, so I fixed the magnets by supergluing them back into there original spots, however I still have a problem. The motor spins fine and it says that it is reading, but then it comes to a stop and says open tray. What could be wrong, I've tried just about everything.

Microsoft Xbox have some common problem like red lights, E74 and Disc Read Error. Microsoft is providing extended warranty for red lights problem, Means you will have to spend some money in order to get this problem repaired from Microsoft also you will have to wait for 3-4 weeks to get your Xbox back. There are many reasons disc read error can occur in your Xbox like your disc might not be clean, laser might also be dirty and many more common problem. Xbox 360 wont read games

Hello Shawn Francis,

This problem happens to a very high percentage of consumers of the Microsoft Xbox 360 Console, so there is no need to fret. The "Open Tray" problem is a common problem, thus' there is a way you can fix it. Most solutions require you to open the console, unless the solution is banging on the top of the console, which I don't recommend.

- Reader -- When your Xbox 360 console is opened, open the disk tray and inspect the reader. This may be dirty. Try to clean it off with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip. There is NO need to assemble the xbox back together when doing each step. Plug in all needed cables into the Xbox 360 and try BEFORE you re-assemble it.

- Magnet -- Inspect the top cover of the disk tray and you will see a black circle, and on the other side, (underneath the sticker,) a silver circle. That silver circle is the magnet that keeps a game disc in place as it spins. It may be out of place, and causing the game disc to move everywhere, not letting the reader read it. There are several methods to take the magnet and the black holder off of the disc tray top cover, just try a YouTube search. Once that is off, you can place the magnet and the black cover onto the Xbox 360 disc spinner, and the disc tray problem will most likely be solved.

If you have any other problems, or concerns, feel free to contact me at any time.

My xbox isn't reading the disc when I put it in

This could be a magnet issue on top of the dvd drive motor, if it has become dislodged the motor will not engage so the console thinks there is no game, if this is the case the motor will need stripping down and the magnet sticking back on, you can try a quick fix to this problem, lay the console down flat insert a game, when it is trying to load give the console a rap with your knuckles(dont go mad) a couple of times where the centre of the game should be, this could dislodge the magnet, this is only a quick fix the magnet will need to be glued back on.
let me know how you get on.

When we put disc in tray keeps popping out and saying close tray.

There is a magnet inside the DVD drive that has dislodged and is now stuck to the top of the drive, causing the tray to keep popping out.

To fix this yourself, you're going to need to open your xbox, open the DVD drive, and glue that little magnet back in its place.

Follow this guide to do it.

Horrible grinding/buzzing noise when spinning game discs and does't read them 50% of the time, but plays dvd movies fine with no buzzing/grinding noise no red lights at any time

It the cd drive hub or the spindle motor pad is dirty.
It isn't clamping the disk firmly so when the drive
speeds up or stops abruptly the disc continues
to spin , it shouldn't cause surface damage to
the cd but it sounds like hell .

If you disassemble the xbox and the cd rom
drive ,clean the the hub and spindle motors pad
this should remedy the noise problem.

Also there is the possibility that
the hub magnet came loose this
would decress the clamping force
of the hub, than you would need to
snap the round magnet in the Hub
back in to place . if get there
let me know and ill explain further

if you have any questions just comment and ill respond

It will read some disks but not all disks and the ones it readds i try to play latter and it dont read

i had this problem with my xbox and its due to either the laser or the magnet within the disc drive that holds the disc in place. the magnet may have come loose which mean u can either open the drive up to try and reposition it, or replace the drive all together. my suggestion would be to send the xbox to microsoft if under warranty or send it to a third party company to see if they can fix it. buying a new drive for your xbox involves some very complex firmware flashing which is not advised

Hey Jay- There is a plastic disc that sits on the centre of the drive inside the box, this disc has a magnet in it that is supposed to hold the game cd in place. What's happened is the plastic has become dislodged from the computer drive and is not the magnet portion is stuck to the drive housing (also metal).

You need to open up the game console, remove the drive and the drive cover and get that plastic disc out of it's holding plate. Once out, you just reinsert the drive (without the cover) and set the disc on top of the game cd-give the game a spin or two with your fingers and it should start up....problem fixed

If you search on Youtube you can see a repair video for this. It takes time, and you have to tear apart the game to get at this puppy. I've since fixed mine and left the plastic game housing off as well, so as to get rid of the overheating problem.

Screw microsoft and their crappy manufacturers.

Cd-tray keeps ejecting

I had this problem too, and after being denied my cardboard coffin from microsoft, i ripped the console apart to get at the source of the issue. Deep inside the disc drive, there is a small magnet. This magnet had come undone, and THIS was the problem. With a drop of superglue, it was put back into place. We faced a few issues with the fix, but overall, after a few hours of tinkering, we got the 360 working once more. Albeit, it runs louder now, it still plays games, and i'd rather have it noisy and working than quiet and dead. Be carefull when taking apart your 360, watch a tutorial. Hope this helps!
