I have an old Dell desktop with a burned up Maxtor hard drive Model # 31024H1. Since I need to replace it, I want to know what would be a good choice of an updated HD?

I was just reading an article in a computer magizine compairing 7200  RPM hard drives and their is very little difference between. THe change comes if you want a fast hard drive for gaming with you would not want anyway.   If it is an old Dell it has most likely an ide drive. Make sure to buy the same. Windows Xp only supports 320 Gbytes I beleive. Anything above that is subdivided if used as the  system drive.   Newegg.com  is reasonable and has a good slection of hard drives. Some Walmart have hard drives.

I have a maxtor H.D. model # 31024h1 , i cannot find the jumper settings to distinguish between master and slave

Typically, for older MAXTOR drives, put the jumper on the 2 pins closest to where the ribbon-cable connects, to set it to 'MASTER'.
Remove all the jumpers to set it to 'SLAVE'.

I have a dell optiplex and the hard drive has been removed how do i get new hard driveto run tried to install windowsxp disk failed on restart would not find hard drive HELP

Did you replace the old hard drive with a new one?
Check the connections on the drive itself. When you plugged the new one in, there should have been two cables you plugged into it. 1 small one that goes to the motherboard (called the SATA cable), and one wider one which comes right out of the power supply. If either of these is not plugged into the hard drive, you would get a message that says "could not find drive".

Check your connections and try again. If they're ok, then write back with as much detail as you can provide.

Good luck!

I have an old Dell desktop and want to replace HD

From experience I recommend a Western Digital Hard Disk Drive as I have had far less problems with them then Seagate - As IDE is gradually being phased out I recommend acting soon as the drives will become scarce as they are very cheap and lacking in variety at the moment.

In particular the Western Digital Caviar WD5000AAKB is a good value drive - just over a hundred dollars and features 500GB of space 7200RPM and a 16mb Cache

It seems the best for value at the moment once again I advise you not to delay as vendors are gradually phasing them out.

Hope this information pointed you in the right direction ;)

Hard drive problems with Optiplex GX260

You should be able to manually enter the drive perameters into bios. That should let you boot. Or boot it up with a boot disk.

Support can be found at Seagate.com in case this is not the exact drive. The model number you listed was not an exact match.
