Re: xbox360 wont play games only dvd
You can't just replace the drive with a working drive on the xbox 360. the drive is married to the mainboard with a special key. If you replacing the drive with a drive that's the same brand/model them you can take the logic board from the old drive and put it in the replacement drive. otherwise you will have to extract the key from your old drive and patch in the new drive. not an easy task.

This sounds like your lenses is getting dusty. Try buying a lenses cleaning disk and see if that helps. They are usually at local stores for only $10-$15. Here's a few examples.
If it stops working all together, and the lenses cleaning disk doesn't help, then you either have to send it to Microsoft to get it repaired, or get the lenses itself replaced by doing it yourself or a third part company. Hope this helps! -MarcusTurtle
LOL well 9 months later, I'll answer your question. EVERY Xbox360 dvd drive is "married"to it's motherboard. The communication between the drive and motherboard is encrypted with a key (aka- DVD-key) IF you don't flash the dvd-key from the original drive to the replacement then there is no way the Xbox will ever be able to play anythngg other than music and dvds. You NEED the correct key to encrypt/decrypt the 360 games so the motherboard can understand it.
All dvd drives in an xbox360 are married to the motherboard. The new dvd drive needs to be flashed with the bin from the old drive in order for it to play games. We can do this for you if your interested email us firstname.lastname@example.org
I had a problem like this a few days ago, my 360 had problems reading my disks. I ended up opening it up and cleaning the laser in the dvd drive. After that it played fine, if that doesn't work you might need a new dvd drive.
I had the same problem,If it is under warranty send it in ,,, if not then you are going to open it up,, plenty of instruction on how to do this online (google it). see what type of dvd drive you have and then go on ebay and purchase an identical replacment drive. once you recieve it open up YOUR ORIGINAL DVD DRIVE and unplug the green motherboard looking thing on top(Big ONE) there should be four little tabs on this. put it to the side . now open up the new dvd drive and repeat but make sure you dont get these cards switched up.put the old key in the new dvd drive , plug in all 4 tabs, bottom one first. put back together and install back into xbox360. put xbox 360 back together put in disk and enjoy
