Acer Extensa 5420-5687 DVD Rom not working

My dvd rom drive no longer responds. The machine had to be rebuilt a couple of weeks ago and this is the first time that I've needed it since rebuild. The driver software is up to date, but the drive ''can't start.'' The error message was #10. Any suggestions? If we have to install a new drive, where do we find instructions?

A Code 10 is an indication that there is a missing, corrupt, incompatible, etc. device driver. Since you just rebuilt the machine, I'd say the device driver may be missing. There is also a chance that one of the cables aren't completely seated. Unplug and reseat them then restart the machine. Also, verify that the drivers and software are up to date by visiting the manufacturers website (of the dvd, not Acer). From Device Manager, find your drive and right click it to choose Update Drivers.
As for installing a new one if needed, you can get complete documentation from the Acer website but it is generally no more troublesome than releasing a latch, sliding out the old one and pushing in the new one until it latches.

Hello there,

Try this trick,

1. Go to Hardware Profile and Remove your Asus ROM profile.
2. Shutdown your Machine -
3. Remove the Asus ROM from your Sata Connector.
4. Turn your Computer ON without that ROM
5. Shutdown it again, and Reconnect your ROM to those Sata connectors
6. Comment back here if still not working. :)

Dvd rom is not recognized


Not all computers detect DVD-ROMs. Look at the label on your laptop drive. If it says it supports DVD-ROMs, than you will be able to use it. If not, consider buying a DVD-ROM drive.

My acer Extensa 5620Z DVD/CD ROM drive is detected as USB mass storage that provides internet(Modem). When I remove the internet modem, the CD ROM is not listed in My computer. When I put CD or DVD in it...


That is a Vista problem with ACER. Delete the reference in device manager and restart and let the comp reco0gnize and reinstall ...just follow the screen instructions.

There is a registry setting that needs deleting but only if this doesn't work.

DVD ROM can play CD, but not DVD


Hi vikbara,

It's most likely the driver that is missing or corrupt. If you have the original CD for the DVD ROM, I would suggest reloading it. If you don't you can find the driver HERE.

Play/open dvd


If this is the DVD drive that was originally installed in this machine you should be able to go into device manager and update the drivers for the dvd-rom. The drivers should be located the driver cd's that came with the laptop.

Acer extensa 5620 notebook dvd-cd rom doesn't read my dvd. i think i uninstalled driver. how can i find dvd writer driver for my notebook?


go to device manager under System Properties. Locate DVD/CD Drives, expand it, select your drive, right click and then left click on properties, select the General tab and check the state of the device IT SHOULD indicate the device is working properly, if so or if not, select the Driver tab unomstall the driver, reboot, see if Windows will reinstall the driver as it should recognize the device as a new drive. If not return to the device manager and reinstall the driver.

I can't finalize a DVD on my Acer Extensa 4420. I follow the instructions, but the DVD is only readable in my Extensa, not in any other system.


Have you got a dvd/rw drive or dvd rom drive,

A DVD/RW drive will write DVDs
A DVD Rom Drvie will only read DVDs

If its a DVD/RW then remove device and reinstall

if you need more info please tell me what OS your using and make and model of your machine or pc

* please check dvd rom cable(ide cable) is connected properly

* check powerconnecter is connected tight
jumper settings:
-------------------------

* set ur hdd as master

* dvd rom as slave in ide1

* set master to dvd writer in ide 2

How Can I Fix My Laptop DVD/CD Player? It's Not Working Right Anymore


Provide a CD/DVD cleaner disc and clean it maybe it help;
I encoutered that problem 3 months ago, the DVD ROM recognized only few DVD disc, other DVD's won't even the windows is freshly installed. The laptop was return back to the store they replace it.

However, in your case; it work fine before so maybe i suggest you to clean your DVD rom using the cleaner, if not work then , scan your computer with a potent antivirus, if this not work also, maybe i recommend to format and reinstall the system,

If all of those are not working maybe its time for you to enjoy the warranty of your laptop if the laptop has a warranty. hope this help.
