Question about LG LMV1630ST Microwave Oven

1 Answer

LG MS194A Not lighting up and heating up

I have an LG MS-194A Microwave oven which went off two weeks ago and could not power up. Opening it up I found the Fuse clamps borken. I soldered in both clamps and the oven is powering up with the control panel on and the timer working. The problem now is that the lamp does not light up and the oven does not heat up.

What would be the problem now??

Is it OK to test the lamp with a 12V battery to check if its working.

  • sibonan Jan 13, 2009

Test all switches by following the instruction and found them OK. How do I test the lamp/bulb??

Can I remove it and test it using batteries?

It is probably a bad door switch (upper or lower) or one of the switch mounts is damaged or misaligned.

Some help here:

An exploded view is here.

Since you are in PNG, you'll have to find parts locally or maybe via Stokes in Australia.

As long as the battery voltage is less than or equal to the rating of the bulb's voltage, yes.

If it's a halogen type, be sure to wipe the bulb off with a dry cloth before reinstalling it as oils from the skin can cause them to overheat.

From the decription that you have provided, the magnetron is highly suspect and is the most expensive part to replace, cheaper to replace the microwave oven in the long run.

I have a LG Microwave that shuts itself off before its done cooking any comments? The lights and clock are still on so its still getting power

The microwave oven has a temperature sensitive thermal fuse, if the magnetron overheats "heats food" it shuts that sector down until it cools down, "up to 30 minutes before it will reset" sometimes the thermal fuse becomes defective opening up because it has become intermittent over time. This is a tricky problem to diagnose and should be checked by somebody who is familiar with these types of devices.

Chances are you have shorted or blown high voltage rectifier diode.

Here is a link you or someone you know can use to test it, but please read the safety info:

Change of lamp in LG microwave oven MS-194A

If there's no obvious removable cover over the bulb (and the owner's manual doesn't address it) some disassembly may be required.

Always unplug a microwave before removing or installing any bulbs.

If it's an over the range type, remove the vent grille across the top and see if bulbs can be accessed there. There may be a panel on the bottom covering the light(s), instead.

If not, chances are you'll have to remove it from the wall, then remove the outer cover. If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

If you don't have your instructions, please reply back with your brand and model number.

Once it's out of the wall, the outer cover (wrapper) will need to be removed, just as you'll need to do on a counter top model.

On a counter top model, be sure it's unplugged, but otherwise ignore the instructions above this paragraph.

The screws you need to remove should be pretty obvious, but a special driver (such as a T20H Torx type or GTXH20-100) may be needed.

Be sure to put all the screws back in the right holes, since some may be special grounding screws.

Bulbs can be had in most grocery stores, hardware stores, home improvement centers, and big box or department stores.

Many models use halogen lamps. You must not touch the new one with your bare skin, as the oils will shorten the bulb life.

Lg LMV1630st stainless steel microwave oven

I'm confused. If it's 6 weeks old, you can get it repaired free.

If it's 1-1/2 years old, the manufacturer will cover the part cost of the magnetron (assuming that's what's wrong) and you will have to pay for labor and any other needed parts.

Also, the subject line mentions a model LMV1630ST while your message body mentions model LMV1680BB.

For Goldstar / LG / customer service, help, call 1-800-243-0000 (M-F, 7am-8pm CT, Sat 8-5 CT) and choose the appropriate prompt from the menu or visit here.

Chances are your problem is a bad magnetron, but it may be another high voltage part.
