Re: long text messages cut off
You should be able to scroll using the down arrow on the main menu button, however I can tell you as an AT&T customer that their text system doesn't allow as long text messages as some other carriers do.

As a set limitation to the phone's design, if the SMS Inbox is consumed, the phone's alternative is to send as an MMS.
