Be sure that the batteries were tested with a load tester. If it is not the batteries then ohm test the brakes. It should be around 35 ohms.

    Mercury prism mobility scooter

The distance a scooter will go depends on the size and weight of the load also. If two people are different height ( wind drag ) and different weight or there is a difference in load you are carrying then there will be a difference in how long the charge will last. Since you switched the batteries with no change then this could be the case. There are other factors that can cause this as well , such as brake dragging, wheel bearings going out, low tire pressure if your tires are air, if 4 wheel scoters then wheel alignment. hope that helps.

How do I test if the batteries are still working? I have not ride or switch on the scooter for at least 3 years.

Assuming you don't have a voltmeter and can't check to see if the batteries are producing 12.6 volts, remember that these batteries are around $36 each at Radio Shack and easy to replace if your hands are working. If it's really important, spend the $36.

If your hands don't, or you don't have a Radio Shack, a scooter replace shop locally charges $85 an hour, min one hour, to troubleshoot and diagnose the batteries, then will charge for the parts at around triple the Shack price. I'm sure there is a repair facility similar around your area.

To test the batteries without a voltmeter, charge the scooter overnight, get on in the morning, and starting at the slowest speed, go forward a little bit, slowly working your way up to the full speed. Stay around your charger, IOW don't go for a 3 mile ride, until you know if and how much of a charge the batteries are holding.

One last thought, in our scooter, new batteries only lasted 2 years and 2 weeks before losing their capacity. Our local "small town" Shack had the batteries in stock, so they seem to be a popular item.

    Good luck!

I have a scootamart large scooter, not sure if 6 or 8 mph.batteries have been checked and are perfect but can only travel 5 or 6 miles on a full charge.what can be wrong.

Hi. How many amp/hours are your batteries?
Who tested your batteries, and how did they test them.
I have had batteries tested by an auto electrical technician, who said the batteries were OK. I knew at the time that the batteries were faulty.
What he did was do a short high current test, that he would normally do on a car battery.
To test batteries in a scooter you have to do a constant current test on fully charged batteries, and monitor the battery voltage. When the battery voltage drops to 10.5 volts across the 12 volt battery, that is considered a flat battery. Take the time elapsed for the test, and you can roughly work out the amp/hour rating of your batteries.
    The amp/hour rating of a battery is worked out on a 10 or 20 discharge. A 40 amp/hour battery can supply 2 amps/ hour for 20 hours.
If you take 20 amps per hour, you will not get 2 hours of use. You will probably only get 1.5 to 1.75 hours of use. The more current ( amps ) you take out of a battery, the less amp/hours it will supply.
The best way to test your batteries is a constant current test, but they take a few hours, or try new batteries.

Also how long do you charge your batteries for. Most chargers need to be on at least over night to fully charge your batteries.
Some chargers have a green LED that comes on when the batteries are nearly full. This green LED is a guide only, and most batteries still need a few more hours to do a full charge.
    Good luck. Neil.

Batteries die fast on my mobility scooter.

Hi. What size batteries you buy will be limited to the amount of room you have in the machine.
17 amp hour batteries are really a bit small for any mobility equipement. A lot of power chairs have 35 or 40 amp/hour batteries.
Buy the biggest that will fit into the available space.
Batteries are designed to perform a certain number of "charge cycles". If you run your batteries down by 75%, you will only get a small number of "charge cycles". If you only use 25% of the batteries capacity, you will get 100's of "charge cycles".
The best I have seen is 7 years out of a set of batteries. Short trips and recharging after each trip is the reason.
    Good luck. Neil.

I have XL8 and need to replace batteries, what is the amps strength to give me greater miles, Im a big guy and need to go further than just a few miles

    hi, according the manual

    http://www.pridemobility.co.uk/docs/UK_Celebrity_XL8_om.pdf

    the batteries are
    Battery Requirements
    Size: U1 (31-36 AH)

Weight Capacity 181 kg, 28 stone (400 lbs.)

Range Per Charge1 (With 31-36 AH batteries) Up to 40.23 km (25 miles)

You can use 40Amps batteries for this scooter and that will increase the total distrance to 27 miles max depending on your weight.

    Travel pal will not charge

It is time to replace the batteries. Buy two, not just one. This scooter takes two 12 volt, 12 amp hour, sealed deep cycle batteries. If you replace just one, the charger will not charge them properly. Take off the seat (pull upward). Turn the scooter on its side. Remove the six screws (2 in front, 2 under the foot rest, and 2 in the back. Unsnap the old batteries (one at a time) and replace with new. Be sure to keep the wiring as is, so you keep the circuit in series (not in parellel). In fact, before you remove the old batteries, label the connections (A to A, B to B, etc.) so you reconnect just as they were. Total cost is about $200. Time to replace is about a half hour.
