I recently encountered one in my line of work that had the same issue - It was not showing up in local disk management and I constantly got the this device is malfunctioning error

I eventually came to the conclusion it was not voiding the warranty to attempt to reformat it so I sent it back to the manufacturer to have it replaced: However if you have made this device yourself you may be able to disasemble it and use it as a primary HDD temporarily and reformat it.

The latter is very complex I suggest putting your warranty to good use;

Hope this helped

Hi there my hard drive wont turn on. the power cord and usb cable is absolutley fine. I just stopped workin all of a sudden

The disk-drive has malfunctioned.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service".
For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive,
just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

If it still has a valid WARRANTY, exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.

If the warranty has expired, then open the case, remove the disk-drive, buy a new "compatible" disk-drive, connect it, and thus "revive" your external storage device.

My WD external drive is plugged in, and my computer keeps saying that one of the usb devices has malfunction and is not being recognized. I have very important data on this drive. How can I fix this...

The problem may not be with the hard drive itself but with the interface between the drive and the USB port. The drives in most cases are fine if they have not been dropped or abused. The problem with external drives is usually the small circuit board that contains the sata to usb interface. Try purchasing another external hard drive enclosure and remove the drive from the enclosure you now have. There are guides on youtube to show you how to take one of those WD enclosures apart. Just install the hard drive in the new enclosure and load the driver files that come with the new enclosure. You should have a working external drive....as long as the hard drive has not failed.

My HP Simple Save external hard drive worked fine,

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43).

Try reinstalling the driver software for your external drive.

Did you plug in a usb flash card? something that may have reassigned drive letters?

I have a 1000gb external hard drive ( My Book Essential Edition) it has malfunctioned. Please Advise what I should do? Will I lose all my data?

It sounds like your hard drive is damaged my friend. Hard drives are very, very dilicate pieces of machinary. The disk is paper thin and any sudden jarring, especiaiy dropping it creates a warp in the drive. Unplug it to prevent further damage. Don't worry in many cases you can have the data retrieved from your hard drive by using this online company that I highly recommend:
