when I am working on my HP pavillion dv 5000 the screen goes black. The computer is still on, so i press the lid close button and the screen comes back on for 5-10 seconds and then goes black again. The only way to use my HP is to constantly press the lid close button. Obviously, this is super annoying. Its not the power settings... I've played with every setting available and still encounter the same thing. Could it be the graphics card or lid close latch malfunctioning??

With all the descriptions listed above, I see that the issue is with the Lid Switch which should be the faulty component.
If you are getting the display back after the Lid Switch is pressed, this makes it clear that the issue is with the Lid Switch which need to be looked at and fixed.
Hope this helps...

Sounds like its trying to go into sleep mode or standby or just turning the screen off.

This usualy happens because in the power options, the screen is set to shut off after say 5 minutes. It could be that the lid closed sensor is bad and it thinks your closing it and does this.

Try right clicking on the desktop, select properties, in the pop up box, select the scren savers Tab and at the bottom it should have a button for the power options.

Click that, in there you should see several new tabs partaining to your power options. one has some drop down boxes that lets you set what it does when the lid is close, when you press the power button and when you press the sleep button.

I would try turning the, " turn off screen option" to off and see if it still does it.

It usually says. 'When I close the lid to my laptop, i want it to: " then it will list the options.

Also turn off the standby settings if you want so it doesnt go into standby every time you walk away for 5 minutes.

Just set it how you want. but for now, just disable the close lid options so we can see if it still does it.

Good luck and let me know.

Well, it sounds like the graphics processor is going out. If thats the case, then you may be out of luck cuz you have to replace the whole Mobo.

Its not over heating or anything is it?

Try updating the drivers through the manufacturers web site for you laptop/notebook. It could just be that.

Push down on the plastic left hand palmrest. If the display returns then you have a factory design flaw that HP will not warranty.

HP Pavillion DV4000 notebook display shading

It sounds very much like an inverter issue. The inverter sits under the lcd screen in the screen plastics. It is replaceable, but obviously there is a danger the screen may get damaged.
