HP media center pc ,1170n will not boot. black screen. You can hear the fan come on but black screen.
Sounds like a capacitor has blown on the motherboard, but before condemning it, check the following:
1.) Does the CPU fan turn and does the heatsink get warm after a few minutes?
(This indicates that power is at least getting to the CPU
2.) Check connections of ALL the main power connectors (ie: the 20/24 pin plug to the mainboard and the smaller 4 pin plug to the mainboard.
(If not firmly inserted will stop the board from firing up)
3.) Check the graphics card is firmly seated and test with anew graphics card to eliminate the issue being with the graphics card / check tightness of the VGA cable to monitor and card
4.) Remove all but the main power and 4 pin power plugs and try rebooting to eliminate hard drive or DVD drive failure
5.) Remove and replace each ram module in turn try booting in between
6.) If you have a spare PSU, replace the existing one and test the board using that, sometimes the PSU appears to work, but lacks power to fire up the board.
After all that, you are down to the mobo or CPU, you can try a new CPU, but I feel that the issue is with a blown capacitor or a burned circuit trace, only close inspection of the mobo will reveal bulging, leaking or blown capacitiors (small cylinder like things on the motherboard)
