PC won't stay on, doesn't make it past the boot up menu

Power on the tower and it sometimes makes it to the blue boot up screen and then just shuts off. Both fans are working fine. I've tried hitting F9, F11 etc. but then it just shuts off. At times it won't even get that far just turns on for a second or two then stops.

The fan on the CPU working? Try a different power supply the one you have might be faulty

  • Anonymous Nov 18, 2012

Thanks Robert. I opened up the tower and saw that both fans were working except one was "loose". There was a tiny plast piece that broke off that was helping to clamp down. So I unscrewed the entire thing and superglued the plast piece back and WA-LA the fan is now in place and I just booted up in safe mode. :) whew!

yep CPU was overheating, so the thermal protection was shutting it off but its usually the fan not working. in this case it seems the heatsink wasnt firmly on the cpu. Glad I could help.

SOURCE: Computer froze, I had to turn it off. 4 options

Well its seems like some system files are corrupted due to which earlier your system froze and now its unable to load

Restart the system and press F8 to go into advanced boot option

Highlight the option of Last know good configuration with the arrow key and press enter...if it load successfully it fine

Else repeat the procedure and go in to Safe Boot with command prompt option

Then on the black scree where you will get the cursor blinking (command prompt)

Type the following command.

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

.it would bring the system restore option

Selected the restore date back to a date when you system was working fine...it would restart the system automatically and your problem would be solved

SOURCE: none of the keys work

Hi,

are you using a usb keyboard? A lot of systems require a ps/2 (purple round connector) keyboard to access the bios settings and anything on the startup screen unless you have set usb on boot in the bios settings. I would try connecting a ps/2 keyboard and see if it helps.

Hp D4000 won't boot up. Power supply light is on solid green but its almost as if the power button on the tower is not turning the tower on.

Computer does not boot up The problem maybe the RAM, it is faulty or just needs reseating to make proper electrical contact.
Reseat the RAM and then boot up your laptop. If it still does not boot up then remove the RAM module/s and take them to your friendly computer repair shop and get them to test the RAM for you. Just like you sometimes need a mechanic to repair your car, sometimes you do need a technician to diagnose and identify the fault or faults on your computer. Not only does a good service technican have the experience to deal with this type of problem, they also have the equipment that allows them to look at things the average computer user can't see, and he has a collection of replacement parts that can be used to quickly test individual components on your computer.

it's more than likely a driver issue, as the computer boots tap the f8 key and you'll presented with a boot menu. load the system in safe mode and see if it loads properly. if it does, uninstall the video drivers (usually the culprit) and then load the drivers from the manufacturer's website. windows update drivers sometimes screw things up more than they help. you can also tap the f8 key at boot and toggle down to 'do not restart on system failure' and restart. when the pc boots and it blue screens again it will stay on the screen and you can get the failure hex code. that will help us diagnose it

The laptop stays on for few minutes and then it turns itself off but before it does that, it shows a large blue scree and some large white text, the text flicks a little but fast to the point where I can...

First of all Turn of your laptop.
Now this time when you turn on your laptop start tapping F8 Key on you keyboard when you Toshiba logo. Tap F8 key for at least 5-6 times.
You will get a Windows Advance Option Menu. You will see lot of options over their written in white text. Your mouse will not work on this screen. Use UP and DOWN arrow keys on you keyboard and highlight Last known good configuration. Once highlighted press enter on it. See if you computer boots. If it boots try doing a restore.
If it doesn't boot.
Turn off your computer and then turn on your computer. On Toshiba Logo screen tap F8 key once again and go to windows advanced option menu screen once again and this time hightlight Disable automatic restart on system failure. Now when you see Blue screen coming up on your computer once again your computer won't restart. Now you can write down the information to trace out the blue screen that is occurring on your computer. Write down the Error code which will be in form of STOP 0x000000XX, you find this error code somewhere at the bottom of the blue screen.
Once you get the reply here, we will see what we can do.
