I was able to dig this up. Reference: http://4sysops.com/archives/tip-how-to-install-and-uninstall-a-program-in-safe-mode/
Run Windows in safe mode. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\ Create a registry key REG_SZ keyand call it MSIService and value data and call it Service, which is the windows installer. This will give you permission to uninstall windows service Pack 3 from add/remove programs while in safe mode.
Well if you have it installed on the computer and cant get past the Windows logo. Put the SP3 disk in and do a repair. Make sure you hit -R and not the repair button after clicking continue. Well the directions for a repair will be on the screen. That is my thoughts on what you should do. If you have already done this, then I'm not sure where you should head to next. Hope this helps!!
The latest service for XP is SP3.
You need to download SP2 from Microsoft (SP2 which includes SP1).
Then you need to install SP2 and after SP2 is installed you need to download SP3 to install.
SP3 is approx 350Mb so if you have a friend who has it on a CD, then borrow it and install it using the CD.
me too have that problem, i updated me XP SP2 to SP3 and failed to install bluetooth, then i removed SP3 and re install bluetooth, it worked fine, as my comment, reinstall ur OS to windows XP SP2 and try.
After remoting into system, noticed that updates.exe was still running in the task manager. Ended updates.exe and downloaded and installed Service Pack 3 for Windows XP. It installed, customer rebooted. Advised on a few maintenance tips for restore points, etc. Skip was a pleasure to work with.
If HDD makes shshshsh.... or spinning sound or generates heat, your HDD might be ok. Next Try with XP sp2 cd. If it again cant detect HDD, go to BIOS setting and watch if the HDD is showing it's status. If Bios can not detect HDD check HDD cable and power cable inserted in HDD. Replace them if needed. Format the HDD with another PC. If you still have problem replace HDD with new one. One thing you might use your corrupted HDD as a slave drive later, i hope.
Reboot and keep tapping on F8 into Safe Mode. You can select "Last known good configuration" or continue In safe
mode and do a system restore to the day before you installed the SP3. To do
a system restore, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools,
System restore. Windows XP SP3 has some issues with certain programs giving
the blue screen of death.
Do you have a Windows XP disk? If so, insert that to complete the installation. If that doesn't work, try using this link to download SP3.
