Boot issue - HP Media Center m7250n (ED842AA) PC Desktop

    Had to replace the Power Supply, now the computer will not boot up, this is the error msg I get: "Reboot and select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Device Media in selected Boot device and press a key".

    Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance. HP Media Center PC m7060n.

    need alittle bit more information like what does it say on the screen or what it acts like when it boots... does the screen turn on? there can be numorous problems for an issue like that... anywhere from os issues to hard drive issues to the motherboard being fried.

Boot device means the harddisk...check the kabels.
Is there power on the harddisk?
If this not helps than....
when the pc starts up push delete view times...than your must be in the bios.
push f5 than push f10 and enter...
The pc restarts.....if thre are the same problem.

Step 1: I would suggest you to boot in safe mode with networking and check if you face the same issue. To boot into safe mode refer to the link
provided below: a)Restart the computer. b)Start tapping the F8 key.
c)You will get advanced boot option window. d)Select the option “Safe mode with networking”

My gateway desktop model gt5026e shuts down/reboots automatically. i cleaned the cooling fans and made sure they were working properly but it still reboots at random,


To isolate the issue, try to boot to the BIOS screen by tapping on F2 on boot. If it goes to the BIOS and does not restart, you have good hardware components. If the issue is still eminent in the BIOS, then you have a problem with your processor. You need to have it replaced.
If it is not hardware, we need to further isolate. Boot to Safe Mode by tapping on F8 on boot. Choose either safe mode or safe mode with networking.
No issues on safe mode: then the problem is with the advanced software. Try to remember when the issue started. Restore your computer setting to previous date before the issue started. (start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore). Once you have booted to normal mode, do not forget to update your security software and scan your system.
If there are issues with safe mode: There is bigger problem with your OS. Try system restore as well. Hopefully this fixes the issue. If it does not, you need to reformat your system.

We have desktop xp and it is running on safemode how do we take this off


You can't take off Safe Mode, it's there for your protection. However, if you want to boot into Normal Mode, shut down the computer. When you hear the computer beep, start tapping F8 on your keyboard. Keep tapping it until you reach the Advanced Options menu. Once you've reached this, just select "Start Windows Normally".
Now it will boot you into Windows on Normal Mode, not Safe Mode.

Is a long and hard process and you need to be patient.

You can obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks from Microsoft, but only by download.They provide the Setup boot disks so that you can run the Setup program on computers that cannot use a bootable CD-ROM.. If you can start your computer from a CD-ROM or from a network-based installation, we strongly recommend that you use those installation methods instead.

You need to make a boot disk for a Windows XP system. .A boot disk can start the operating system on a computer running Windows XP if it will not boot properly and the damage is suspected to be in the files that start Windows.
Problems occur, issues arise, and most times it's unavoidable. Corruption or a boot sector virus can render just about any system dead in the water. So what could happen? In this section we cover some basic issues that can occur so that you just what your up against and why a boot disk can be very handy.

If you are not sure ask help from somebody that can understand this procedures.

This issue can be caused by any of the below reasons.

-Corrupt boot files on the computer.
-Settings for hard disk drive are not correct.
-Floppy diskette or CD in computer causing issue.
-Boot devices not set properly.
-BIOS corrupt or misc. setting not set properly.
-Connections loose or disconnected.
-Bad Hard disk drive or other bad hardware.

Solution:


Corrupt boot files on the computer

If the computer has no bootable files on the drive it is attempting to boot from it is possible that the computer may halt at " verifying dmi pool data..."

To resolve this issue:

Boot from a bootable floppy diskette. Ensure that this diskette was made on the same Microsoft Windows operating system that is installed on your computer.

Once at the A:\> prompt type "sys c:" and press enter. This should report the message "File system transferred." Once transferred remove the diskette and reboot the computer.

If the computer continues to not boot attempt to re-create the master boot record by booting from the bootable floppy diskette again. Once at the A:\> prompt type "fdisk /mbr" and press enter. This should return you to the prompt without giving you any message. Once at the prompt remove the diskette and reboot the computer.

Note: The above information only applies to Microsoft Windows users. If you are running a Linux / Unix variant or other operating system such as OS/2 and the computer is freezing at this DMI message ensure that Linux / Unix has been properly installed first and/or your boot manger is not corrupt.

Settings for hard disk drive are not correct

The computer freezing at "Verifying dmi pool data..." may be caused when the hard disk drive settings within CMOS are not set properly. Enter CMOS and verify that the hard disk drive settings are set properly and/or that it is set to Auto Detect.

Floppy diskette or CD in computer causing issue

Verify no floppy diskette or CD is in the computer. In some cases the computer may be trying to boot from either of these drives causing issues with the boot sequence.

Boot devices not set properly

The computer stopping at " verifying dmi pool data..." can be caused when the boot devices on your computer are not set properly in CMOS. First, verify that no CD or diskette is in your computer. If a CD or diskette is in the computer attempt to remove this first to determine if it was attempting to boot from it.

If No CD or diskette is in the computer and your computer still halts at the DMI message enter CMOS setup and verify that the boot options are set properly. We commonly recommend that the floppy be set the first boot device, hard drive as the second boot device and the CD-ROM as the third boot device.

BIOS corrupt or misc. setting not set properly

If none of the above recommendations have resolved your issue attempt to reset the BIOS / CMOS settings to the factory or default settings.

Connections loose or disconnected

If the computer has been recently moved or new hardware has been installed in the computer it is possible that a connection may be loose or even disconnected. Verify that the hard disk drive, floppy and CD-ROM cables are properly connected.

Bad hard disk drive or other bad hardware

If you computer continues to freeze at the DMI message after attempting all of the above recommendations it is possible that the computer may be freezing because of a bad hard disk drive or other bad hardware in the computer.

Before replacing any hardware we first recommend you attempt to erase everything on the hard drive and start over.

If you're unable to get to the point of re-installing the operating system it's likely your computer has a hardware issue and it's suggested that the hard drive be replaced. If that doesn't resolve the issue then have the motherboard replaced.

Related errors:
Below is a listing of the full error message that may be related to this error.
Windows NT could not start because the below file is missing or corrupt:
C:\Winnt\System32\Ntoskrnl.exe
Cause:
  1. Keyboard issue
  2. Miscellaneous corruption
  3. Corrupt boot.ini file.
  4. Missing boot.ini file.
  5. Missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file.
  6. Windows NT installed on a partition bigger then 7.8GB
  7. Corrupted hard disk drive or severely corrupted Windows.
Solution: Keyboard issue This issue has also been known to be caused by a short in the ground wire in the keyboard cable. Make sure this is not the cause of your error by replacing the keyboard with a different keyboard or simply just disconnecting the keyboard from the computer.
Miscellaneous corruption Before trying any of the below recommendations it's recommend that you attempt to load the last known good configuration. Additional information about doing this can be found on document CH000626.
Corrupt boot.ini file This issue is often caused when the boot.ini is missing or improperly configured. This issue often arises after a user has recently added or removed an operating system on the computer or added or removed hard disk drives in the computer. Make sure the line pointing to the operating system and it's drive and partition is properly configured in the [boot loader] and [operating systems] section. Additional information about boot.ini can be found on document CH000492.
Missing boot.ini file Microsoft Windows XP users: If the boot.ini is severely corrupted or missing a user running Microsoft Windows XP can rebuild the boot.ini to resolve this issue. Additional information about rebuilding the boot.ini can be found on document CH000648. Microsoft Windows NT and Windows 2000 users: To restore the original boot.ini file in Microsoft Windows NT or Windows 2000 you will need an ERD and follow the below steps. If you do not have an ERD you will be unable to follow these steps.
  1. Boot the computer with your Windows NT three setup diskettes or the Windows 2000 setup disc.
  2. In the setup menu, type R to start the repair.
  3. When prompted for the ERD diskette insert the diskette and inspect the startup environment.
Missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file If the ntoskrnl.exe file is corrupt or missing this can also generate the error. To restore this file follow the below steps.
  1. Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue.
  2. Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
  3. In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
  4. Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.
  5. Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32
  6. You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press enter to overwrite the file.
  7. Type exit to reboot the computer.
Windows NT installed on a partition bigger then 7.8GB If you are running Microsoft windows NT 4.0 on a partition larger than 7.8GB this issue can occur if the boot files are located outside this limitation. When this error occurs your computer will have the error message as shown below. OS Loader v4.01
Disk I/O error status=00000001
Windows NT could not start because the below file is missing or corrupt: winnt\system32\Ntoskrnl.exe
Please reinstall a copy of the above file. If your system partition is larger than 7.8GB you will need to delete the partition and recreate the partition to 7.8GB or less. Additional information about this issue can be found on Microsoft KB Q224526.
Corrupted hard disk drive or severely corrupted Windows Attempt to check the hard disk drive for any errors by running the chkdsk error. To do this follow the below steps.
  1. Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue.
  2. Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
  3. In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
  4. Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.
  5. Once at the recovery console type chkdsk /r
  6. Once completed type exit and see if issue is resolved.
If after trying all of the above steps you are still encountering the same issue it's likely that Windows is severely corrupted and it is recommended you attempt to reinstall Windows. Additional information about erasing the computer and starting over can be found on document CH000186. Finally, if during the Windows installation you encounter errors it's likely that your hard disk drive is bad.
