My computer is a Gateway Notebook MX8523 and I use wondows media player to play my music. The files are MP3. This problem just started. When I play music the is static it sounds like the laptop speakers may be blown. This laptop is 3 years old but up until this time I never heard any static when I played music. If the laptop spekers are blown would this be a costly repair.

Plug in a set of headphones to see if they have static also. This
will narrow it down to the speakers or something else. Tell us the results. Speakers are inexpensive. Labor is not.

    May I ask;

    The model of your Laptop

What Program you use to play music?

What format the sound files are?

    When you noticed this issue?

Try hooking it up to an external Speaker. If this works then you will be better off getting a new laptop. If it dosn't work then you need to re-install the driver for your speakers

XP got reinstalled on my computer and I dont have the audio driver so my computer doesnt play music and doesnt recognise the computer

You need the audio Drivers.
Go here:
This is the support site for the Gateway Computers. There wasn't a listing for the E-4000 so i used the E-4100, it should work just fine.
Download the most recent Audio Driver and install it. Restart your computer and that should fix it.
Hope it was helpful.

What causes static in your speakers that are connected to your computer when the computer is sitting idle, OR when music is playing?

DUST will cause static and bad connections
the speakers plug/outlet is usually at the back of the computer you will have to open up the computer to check the lead attached to the rear of the input plug make sure the connection is good
try cleaning your computer of dust using a fine air blower from a compressor making VERY sure that there is no MOISTURE in the air line specifically around the sound card and the CPU central processing unit dust causes static to build up in a computer
hope this helps

Instaalling new ram avoiding static problems.

one way to avoid static, is to literally work naked, on a hard floor (avoid carpets), and allways hold a hand on the frame of the case. but, you realy don't need to work naked either, just make sure that you are properly grounded, (hold on to the frame to decharge yourself of static) work without socks, and preferably on wooden floors or similar. Have fun.

Need to change hold music ASAP

How about turning off the Music On Hold source at the phone system. It will be an external device ( radio, mp3 or cd player ) and turn it back on when you are on-line.

Should i get rid of this gateway

Before getting rid think twice. Because the value you for second selling is very low, Buying a new one is quite an asset. If the problem you had is minor i suggest to keep it otherwise (Problem with motherboard, processor) then get rid of it.

Clearing recent recipient text list

That just deletes the messages. Thanks for trying though! I want to get rid of the "recent recipient" list because there are people on there that I don't send to anymore and there is no reason for them to be on there as options. call me obsessive, I just like being tidy.
