You don't need to change or buy another hard drive, unless you want to install a larger size hard drive.
Boot up with the Windows CD and reinstall Windows.

To boot up from the CD you have to change the CD as the first boot device. Go into the BIOS to change it later you can change it bach to the hard drive as the first boot device.

You need to do this even if you install a new hard drive.

Missing or corrupt windows root system needs to be fixed

Really? What does F9 do? This is a lot of work. Anyway, here we go.
If you have a MS Product key sticker on the computer, and you must. Check which version you have. It might be Windows XP Home.

A free legal Windows image can be downloaded here.
http://www.mydigitallife.info/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-from-digital-river/. The site has links for various Win 7 versions. IT MUST BE THE SAME VERSION as the product key.

Next download this tool, and make a USB Win installation drive.
http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool

Next change BIOS to boot from USB drive. Choose Repair computer when it comes up. Then choose command prompt. Type sfc / scannow ENTER. This System File Checker. It finds and replaces corrupted system files.

If this fails you still have a Windows image to work with. There are many steps, so hope all goes well.

I cant clean install or run win xp from c drive.or from cd rom using win.repair console ' specified drive is not valid/there is no disk in the drive'? when i type in fixboot in command prompt.. i have...

if the repair console cannot find the c:\ drive then yes the hard drive is done. Before you trash it though I suggest using an Ubuntu Linux Live CD to see if you can rescue your files.

Hello,

this is because your operating system files is corrupt for one reason or the order.

To solve this problem, you need to re-run windows operating system CD (Win XP), by reinstalling windows afresh or repairing windows. This will help to re-install the corrupt files.

That's what you need to do in order to solve the problem.

Good luck.

HELP! Laptop will not boot up!

Try an XP repair:
Boot with the Win XP install CD-ROM, it loads a minimal operating system, similar to DOS, but compatible with Win XP. At the first screen you select install Win XP (not Recovery Console) and at the next screen it will find that you already have Win XP and offer to attempt a repair. This repair should not touch your Applications or data; it just reinstalls the Windows files. This is great because when it works you don't need to reinstall all your software.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Bootmgr is missing

Run a Chkdsk:
Take the Windows XP disk. Boot from it, then DO NOT select F2 (automated system recovery) but continue through the procedure until you get to the point where you can choose between installing Windows XP and entering the Recovery Console. Once you get into the Recovery Console, do chkdsk and fix potential errors on your disks! Chkdsk C: /R

OR:

Perform an XP repair:

Lap top dell inspiron 6400, cant get into windows,

Have you tried doing a winXP repair:

XP repair
When you boot with the Dell Win XP install CD-ROM, it loads a minimal operating system, similar to DOS, but compatible with Win XP. At the first screen you select install Win XP (not Recovery Console) and at the next screen it will find that you already have Win XP and offer to attempt a repair. This repair should not touch your Applications or data; it just reinstalls the Windows files. This is great because when it works you don't need to reinstall all your software.

If the repair does not fix it :

If you have documents you need, you would have to set the hard drive in an enclosure and copy the files over. Then you can run the Dell recovery disk . This will set it up as when it came from Dell.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

System file is "missing or corrupt"

You MUST use the installation bootup disk to install windows it is the only way........... NOT THE RECOVERY DISK this is a MUST. Allow it to go through the motion of installing Windows until it cannot go any further. Then press the "R" key for the console. When in the DOS screen TYPE ... chkdsk /p Windows will repair itself and then you will recover all your data it should be back to normal.
